Local stories I missed while in Denver

It was impossible to keep up with what was going on back here while I was in Denver. So here’s a recap of some stories I caught when reading through my stack of newspapers:

DePaul Medical Center to be 124 beds. Pressure from the City of Norfolk as well as residents has resulted in a revised plan for Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center. The new plan calls for 124 beds and has the city’s support. Kudos to the folks at DePaul Emergency 134 for helping get the word out and for being concerned about the health care needs of our city.

Saga of Chesapeake marching band not resolved. Kids are going to Disney World to march in a parade but the school administration won’t allow them to ride the rides. I think that’s ridiculous. If the parents say it’s OK, why shouldn’t the administration? Somehow, I don’t think going to the Kennedy Space Center can make up for riding a roller coaster.

Iaquinto gets in trouble for flier. I thought the fundraiser invitation was clever but then again, I’m Scots Irish and not Italian.

Rep. Thelma Drake scheduled to speak at RNC. Despite what you may think of her politics, being asked to speak at the Republican National Convention should tell you what the party thinks of our 2nd Congressional District representative. Too bad for her that the cancellation of Monday’s activities meant she didn’t get to speak.

Poll workers needed. Electoral boards across Virginia are having problems recruiting folks to work on Election Day. In Norfolk, about 145 workers are needed. Virginia Beach needs about 170 while Portsmouth is short about 75. If you want to help, contact your local registrar’s office.

ODU suspends search for new president. Seems that the Faculty Senate wasn’t happy with the two finalists and with the withdrawal of one of them, the search has been suspended. I guess filling Roseanne Runte’s shoes is harder than it looks. Hey, acting president John Broderick seems to be doing a good job so I’d just as soon see them hold off until the right person comes along. Remember the mistake of Marchello?

  1. As for Themla Drake, I think her being asked to speak at the convention means the RNC thinks she’s in a fight and needs an image boost.
