About this:
Google this week admitted that its staff will pick and choose what appears in its search results.
There was a time when it was thought that Microsoft was taking over everything. That fear has now been transferred to Google – and rightly so.
As the first linked article says:
Today, the media organisations look to Google to explain what is really happening in the world. Convinced that they can’t lead, the only option left is to follow. So they reflect ourselves – or more accurately, they reflect the unstinting efforts of small self-selecting pockets of activists – back at us. In the absence of editorial confidence, Google – the Monster that threatens to Eat The Media – now defines the purpose of the media. All media companies need do is “tap into the zeitgeist” – Google Zeitgeist™!
We’ve talked in the past of the echo chamber of the blogs, most of whom lack the resources (both in time and money) to do the in-depth analysis that the MSM does. But if they are going to rely on Google-managed information, we’re in a heap of trouble.
Big Brother has arrived. And his name is Google.
The first link provided seems to point out that Google is attempting to deal with people who know how to game the system to always come up number one on certain searches even when they shouldn’t be there.
The second link accuses Google of archiving facial recognition features off the files from your computer and seems to have been written by someone trying to stir up hysteria.
I am not afraid.
Ha! Now I have an excuse for my blog not showing up higher on Google!
I knew you were a geek, but I never ever thought I’d see a link to the Register here 🙂
Yeah, I’m finding the context to be a little off here. This doesn’t sound like the Google that I know and love.
