Need to copy large files? Try TeraCopy

Sometimes, I need to copy files that are pretty large. For example, my Outlook pst file is almost 5 gig (and that is after I archived anything prior to 1/1/08).  I need the file on another computer so I tried to copy it to my 8 gig thumbdrive, my 60 gig portable hard drive and my 500 gig backup drive. In each case, I was told that the receiving drive was “full,” when I knew it wasn’t. So I started copying it from one computer to another, a process that is excruciatingly slow.

I figured there had to be a better way – and that someone had already figured it out 😉 Sure enough, a quick Google search led me to this article. I downloaded and installed TeraCopy (version 2.0 beta 4).

Works as advertised. And it’s free!

(Now to figure out why it only saw 4 gig of my 8 gig thumbdrive as being available 😦 Another Microsoft limitation somewhere?)

Booooo. You should know better than that!

(Good tip on the copy util, though. I have a 4+ GB file that is absolutely not a rip of a Blu-ray DVD that I’ve been having the hardest time moving around.)

  2. Well, I’m trying to make it smaller but part of the problem is all of the files that I receive via email. (And, it just dawned on me that while I archived my email folders, I haven’t archived my calendar. Need to do that.)

  3. I’m lucky to find this post. My company have to back-up a thousand media files (I mean karaoke song files) to other computer. Maybe I will tries TeraCopy.

    Thanks for sharing.
