Spruill responds

There has been a lot written about the comments of Del. Lionell Spruill, Sr. in this article.  Spruill just released the following statement:

In response to comments made on the floor of the House of Delegates during debate on HB2314 by Del. Lionell Spruill, Sr, (D) of Chesapeake.

“While speaking in opposition to a bill that would allow State Police Chaplains’ to express their personal religious beliefs, the intent of my comments was misinterpreted. If anyone was offended, please know that I extend my deepest apology for the remarks and the sentiment that was conveyed.

“While I am a devout Christian, I do not hold the belief that my faith or any other faith entitles any American to special privileges or considerations. That is what motivated me to speak against HB2314 and I am proud that I am among the 30 Delegates who sought its defeat.

“For those that share my faith and my zeal, please know that as we express our views, which we have a right to do, there is a line between being reasonable defenders of the faith and uncompromising believers who don’t understand that we share this country, and all that is good about it, with every American regardless of his or her faith.”

Hopefully, this will put an end to this saga.
