I’ve just received word that Del. Clarke Hogan (R-60) will not run for re-election in the fall.
What is going on in the RPV these days?
UPDATE: Seems The Gazette Virginian got this story earlier. (via RedStorm PAC)

Wow! Good news, better news if we can win it!
There is no candidate yet, as far as I know.
Can Watkins Abbitt be far behind?
I hope so.
Part of what is going on is a combination of burnout and the recession. Anyone who thinks the General Assembly is a 2 months a year job is kidding himself. Constituent service and basic politics eat a good 20-40 hours a week of these people’s time year-round. If you run a lumber business, like Hogan, you’ve probably decided that politics has to take a back seat to business and family, for a while at least. This has happened on our side, too; Albert Pollard quit in 2005 because he had three pre-school aged kids to feed and no time to run his own business.
I suspect we’re seeing more Republicans right now because they’ve been there longer and there are more of them. The propect of becoming a minority again probably doesn’t brighten their mood, either.
And darned if the TD article on Hogan’s annoucement doesn’t say exactly that:
“The father of four young children who took office in 2002 said running a business related to the home building industry requires his attention at this time. He runs Ontario Hardwood in Keysville.”
Well . . .
It is a GOP seat. Let me put this gently. Hogan is no gentleman and he will not be missed.
Let me put this gently. It will be the seat of whomever is elected.
Could be a Democrat.
The Republicans, having lost the Senate in 2007, two Governors runs in a row, and now a 3rd (McDonnell is toast) are poised to lose the majority in the House in 2009. Rats deserting a sinking ship! Watch them scurry!
The RPV is so void of leadership, so missing a direction, they are just running around, gnashing their teeth, flailing their arms and doing anything they think will get them elected. Just as their idiotic HB3202 Regional Taxing Authority mess came back to bite them, so will the No Smoking Ban!
Mark,
Don’t get your hopes up on Del. Abbitt. He’ll probably hold that seat until he decides that he doesn’t want to anymore. I don’t see any sign that he’s ready to go.
