Republican woes

I saw this article by Leonard Pitts earlier this week in The Virginian-Pilot.

You will not believe it, but I have been rooting for the GOP. As well deserved as its recent drubbings have been, the fact is, single-party governance is invariably a recipe for overreaching; the Bush years proved that inarguably. So for the sake of the checks and balances that make our system work, I would like to see the party get off the mat.

Pitts said what I’ve been thinking as we have dealt with the ongoing saga of RPV chair Jeff Frederick  (1, 2, 3) as well as the RNC chair Michael Steele / talk show host Rush Limbaugh dustup that Pitts is referring to. Competition is good for all of us.

Think about it. How can any of us support nonpartisan redistricting, the argument in favor of which being more competition, and want the other guys to fold up their tents and go home? If we truly believe in competition – and I do – then we should all want the other guys to be strong and compete for the hearts and minds of the voters.

As entertaining as these Republican intraparty fights have been, truth be told I want them to stiffen up and put up a good fight.  We wouldn’t think much of a heavyweight boxer’s win over a welterweight, now would we? And we certainly want to put asterisks in the record books when a baseball player sets a new record with the help of drugs.

Success over a weak foe simply isn’t as sweet.

  1. We are trying hard locally here in Fairfax. Finally got a win in the special election. Communicating our solutions to ideas and problems actually works. I agree though at the national and state level its a bit embarassing. You will note that McDonnell wants to get rid of Fredrick. I think he gets it. This governors race should finally be exciting. No Gilmore/Kilgore who can be the most conservative idiot this time.

  2. Wow! Obama and the Dems are just doing a fabulous job! Just fantastic, everything is on pace to correct itself from the Bush years. He and the rest of the Dems are the greatest, Why would we want to question any of their decisions, they are the smartest people on the planet, why didn’t we elect them sooner! Silly American people.

    I can’t wait for the ’10 elections!
