American Idol 4/7/08 & 4/8/08: Elite 8

American Idol LogoYou know you’re working too hard when it’s literally Thursday morning before you realize that you missed not one, but both nights of AI this week. Thank goodness for TiVo 😉 Tuesday night’s show had the remaining eight contestants singing songs from the year of their birth. Best part for me is that the years they were born were the years I was singing six nights a week, so I know all the songs 🙂

Kicking things off was the oldest contestant, Danny, was born in 1980. He sang “Stand By Me.” I thought it was an interesting arrangement.

Kris, born in 1985, chose “All She Wants to Do is Dance.” Another interesting arrangement. Yes, I know they are trying to be original. But sometimes, they take it too far. This was too far.

“What’s Love Got to Do With It” from 1984 was the choice of Lil. Screechy! I was disappointed in her performance.

Anoop, born in 1986, sang “True Colors.”  He did a wonderful job, a nice R&B flavor.

Also born in 1985, Scott chose “The Search is Over.” Hmm, I was expecting a James Taylor tune 😉 Wait – that’s how he sang it. Not good.

Allison was born in 1992(!) and chose “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” (OK, so one of them was born after my singing days were over.) She absolutely nailed it! Bonnie Raitt would proud.

Another 1985 baby, Matt chose “Part-time Lover.” He was back in his R&B groove and demonstrated mad vocal skills.

OMG! My TiVo didn’t record Adam’s performance! No idea what happened, as I have it set to record 5 minutes beyond. I caught the video on the AI website – he sang “Mad World.” I wasn’t impressed but it seems a lot of folks were. Oh well, on to the results show. (My bottom 3: Scott, Lil and Kris)

The Frankie Avalon opening was pretty cool 🙂 Hard to believe that Simon was born in 1959! I thought he was older than that.

The first person in the bottom three was Anoop. I guess Kris has some fans out there, despite his performance. Also in the bottom three was Scott. Only two women are left in the competition – Allison and Lil – and it was Lil who was in the bottom three. (Once again, I got two of three right.)

Have to admit that I fast-forwarded through most of the performances, but not Kelly Pickler 😉  No, she’s not the best singer but she has always been entertaining.

The person receiving the fewest number of votes was Scott. As expected, the judges did not use their save, so Scott was eliminated.

  1. Sorry to see Scott go, he is a very talented young man. I am sure he will work in the business. Adding that forth judge now makes the comments go on for tooooo long, they just say the same stuff over and over week after week.

  2. I actually enjoyed this week’s performance by Scott more than his previous outings, so it was a little disappointing that this had to be the note he went out on (um, although that flat long note during his swan song). My disappointment was tempered though by wondering why in the heck did so few people vote for Anoop? It doesn’t matter whether he gives one of the best performances of the night or the worst, he keeps ending up in the bottom three.

…I’m modestly embarrassed that I watch this show now, Viv. What have you done to me?

    1. Addicting, isn’t it? 🙂 And lots of fun.

As for Anoop – to be honest, I think folks think he doesn’t look like an American Idol. They just don’t recognize his tremendous talent.

      1. Yeah I couldn’t really help but wonder when Kris survived the night and Lil was the first one sent back to the bench how much of that was about demographic appeal instead of singing ability.

  3. Anoop is an excellent artist. So many of the others are packaged.
Who will buy their records? We need a young college kid to win!!
