The Republican Party of Virginia will start its convention today. Bearing Drift will have live coverage throughout the weekend. The convention will officially nominate Bob McDonnell for governor. Bill Bolling, the incumbent LG, has a challenge for that nomination but from reading the righty blogs, it appears he should win in a rout.
The real fireworks will be in the selection of the AG nominee. Vying are three very different men: State Senator Ken Cuccinelli, prosecutor John Brownlee and former school board member David Foster. I was surprised that a (liberal) friend of mine thought so highly of Foster, who I met very briefly at the Shad Planking. Since there is very little chatter about him, though, I don’t expect he will have much of a chance. The battle appears to be between Cuccinelli and Brownlee. The blogosphere has been all abuzz this week about a robocall aimed at Brownlee. Some think Cuccinelli is behind it, others are not so sure. While I’d love to see Cuccinelli nominated (see video below), I suspect cooler heads will prevail and the RPV will nominate Brownlee.
There will also be the election of party chair. Again, the Republican blogs have indicated that this may not be much of a fight. Current interim chair Pat Mullins has gotten a lot of the old guard support. His challenger, Bill Stanley, has gotten a lot of grassroots support, and in this comment, disputes claims of not voting in prior elections.
Grab the popcorn and settle into your favorite chair. This ought to be fun to watch 😉

The one local Republican Party official I have spoken to of late was very high on Foster. I suspect his appeal is to the party pragmatists. That pretty much guarantees he’ll be trounced unless Cuccinelli and Brownlee split the hardcore wingers fairly evenly. It should be an interesting weekend.
No offense, but I thought dog-fighting was proven illegal with the whole Vick mess a couple of years ago. Its not “entertainment” to watch a bunch of old-grey-haired-geezers and a few chubby wannabe’s, talk about how the “socialists” have taken over the world and ignore the broken “abolish the car tax” promise they made! I don’t find people that make “NO” a noun “interesting”! Depressing, scary or upsetting maybe, but interesting, no!
According to B.D., it wasn’t much of a show.
