More calls for Hamilton resignation

From Democratic gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds:

Creigh DeedsFor the past seven years, Virginians from all walks of life have worked hard to earn our ranking as the best managed state in the nation. Phil Hamilton’s actions and subsequent denials not only undermine that effort, but more importantly, betray the public trust. His conduct deserves far more than simple ‘disappointment.’ It deserves our outrage. We cannot turn the other cheek to this type of behavior. He should resign from the House of Delegates immediately

From Democratic LG candidate Jody Wagner:

Jody WagnerDelegate Hamilton abused his position as a public servant for personal gain. His apologies and denials fall short. Virginians deserve elected officials who maintain the highest standards of integrity and honesty, and anyone who fails to meet those should resign. I believe Delegate Hamilton should step down immediately, as he can no longer effectively serve the 93rd District.

State Senator Chap Petersen puts his thoughts on his blog:

The General Assembly is not an employment agency.

I know what some will say: all Democrats. Yep. But the truth is that the definition of right and wrong really don’t change. If something is wrong, it’s just wrong. And Hamilton’s actions were wrong. I’m waiting for the Republican members of the legislature and the Republican candidates to not only say it was wrong, but to also join the call for Hamilton’s resignation.

There’s something else: if Hamilton could not recall the details of this transaction, could it be because he engages in these type of transactions all the time?  If that is the case, then he really needs to go.

UPDATE: The Governor’s remarks are disappointing.

UPDATE2: ICYMI, Steve Shannon called for this first. His statement is below the fold.

Steve ShannonI believe in a steady, level-headed approach to issues, which is why I wanted to take the weekend to think about Phil Hamilton¹s behavior and statements. I have come to the conclusion that given the budget difficulties Virginia is facing and his powerful position in the appropriations and budget processes, I cannot see any way how his behavior can be plausibly explained.

The chain of emails now made public seems to indicate Delegate Hamilton was attempting to secure state funds for the creation of a new center at ODU while, at the same time, negotiating his financial terms of employment with this center that had not yet been created.

The bottom line is that Phil Hamilton appears to have attempted to use his position of public trust and taxpayers¹ money to enrich himself.

While I agree with the sentiments of disappointment expressed by Speaker Howell and Bob McDonnell, only saying we¹re disappointed doesn¹t meet the seriousness of this situation, in my judgment.

I think Phil Hamilton needs to resign immediately, in order to ensure that Virginia maintains its reputation for honest government and fiscal responsibility.

  1. The fact that Hamilton used his NN Public School’s email address to try to hide the transactions is another important link.
He probably thought no one would look there.
I talked to the superintendant of the school system about an hour ago and she is looking into this. This is a major violation of school policy and it puts the school system in a precarious position.

    1. Yep, I think Republicans want to head this off as a statewide issue. Not sure that works as long as Hamilton hasn’t resigned.

  2. It goes without saying that I think Hamilton should step aside. He probably needs to “lawyer up” as he probably will be indicted should the state of feds do an investigation.

Reading those emails, there were 2 sides of the “pay to play” scheme. Dave Blackburn of ODU needs to be shown the door too.
