I remember well the rookie year of Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback Troy Aikman. The team went 1-15 that year, although Aikman didn’t start the one win – his record as a starter was 0-11. But that one win came against my favorite team, the Washington Redskins, who went into the game sporting a 3-2 record.
Yesterday, the Skins lined up against the Detroit Lions, losers of their last 19 games, the second longest losing streak in NFL history. The game wasn’t blacked out in Detroit because it wasn’t a sellout. Even Detroit fans expected the Lions to lose.
But win they did, with a rookie quarterback at the helm. The Redskins, now 1-2, managed to make the Lions look like a playoff team. It was painful to watch. (About the only thing as painful was watching Michael Vick come in for those “Wildcat” plays for the Eagles.) Calls for the head of Coach Jim Zorn abound.
I have to agree with one of the talking heads (don’t remember which) who said Zorn wasn’t going anywhere, mainly because in addition to being the head coach, he’s also the quarterbacks coach and calls the offensive plays. So it would take three people to replace him.
The problem with the Skins ain’t the coach – it’s the owner. Unfortunately, there’s really no way to fire an owner, except to hit him where it hurts: in the pocketbook. I haven’t attended a Skins game in years. My Skins stuff – sweatshirts, coats, hats – is all old and worn. I refuse to give him any of my hard-earned money.
Until Snyder leaves, the team will never get back to its glory days. And that’s a real shame.
You really think it’s Snyder? Or the GM?
I will say this — when even Joe Gibbs can’t bring the team back to glory, you know there are problems well beyond mere staff. I’m still burned over letting Schottenheimer go way back when… that was the last truly physical Redskins team to take the field.
I agree with you entirely, Viv.
I went to a concert a few months ago at the staduim and it is a disgrace. Dirty, dingy, etc.
Snyder is the loser and is dragging what used to be a great franchise team down with him.
Yeah, Shaun, I think it’s Snyder. It goes deeper than the coaches. I have had no respect for Snyder since he brought Deon Sanders to the team.
laura – I’ve never been to the new stadium. I was thinking about making a trip this season but noway now.
I still think it would have been great to have Terrell Owens in a Skins uniform… just to have him stand in the middle of the star like he did with the 49ers.
I agree with Vivian that Snyder is the biggest problem for the Redskins. And I completely disagree with you Shaun about getting TO in a Skins uniform. I don’t want that overrated showboat anywhere near Washington unless his team brings him there for an away game; besides that, there are enough blowhards in DC as it is.
I’m with you on TO. Would hate to see him in a Skins uniform.
Hail to the Deadskins!
Riggins tweets were spot on. Instead of hanging our with Tom Cruise on the sidelines, maybe Zorn could have gotten ready for the game?
I’ll say it again- Gregg Williams should have been the head coach and Campbell just doesn’t have “it”.
It’s going to be a LONG and trying season.
Sigh..
I’ll also add to this- there are some “good” (but not great) player- Cooley, Moss are two of them. However, these guys just cannot “gel” as a team. I think you are right- it starts with Snyder and rolls downhill.

Now, get the H out of your sake sucker and go buy a Ford or Buick!
One of my earliest memories as a child was going to Redskins games with my Dad at the old Griffiths stadium. What a cool old ball park. Shame they tore it down, but JFK was a great place too.
I must be getting old, as I remember the days of owner, Jack Kent Cook and the real Redskins! A team you would watch and love one week and cringe and hide the next! I loved them. I was in JFK Stadium when Sonny Jergenson flipped the bird to the referee and the stadium went nuts! What a great team that was! You threw a Hail Mary with your analysis Vivian. Snyder has destroyed the team. I used to drive up the DC to see a game, as recently as 9-years ago, but haven’t in years because of his mismanagement. Good point by Shaun in that, if Joe Gibbs couldn’t bring them back, it wasn’t coaching, its the owner. Luckily for all of us, even a rich, over-privileged, mental midget like Snyder will eventually have to sell the team! AT SOME POINT! And not until he does, will Redskin fans know the former glory of their team! Last I heard Zorn is going to open up a Bakery in SE DC and specialize in Turnovers!!!!!!
Well, not to knock Vivian, but putting the blame on Snyder is not unique to her. John Riggins said the very same thing in the post-game show.
Two people can come to the same conclusion, Mouse. As a matter of fact, this isn’t the first time I’ve called for Snyder to be gone.
Not the first time anyone’s called for Snyder’s head over the last 10 years anyhow. Sonny has always blamed Snyder for gutting the front office back in the 1990s after Jack Kent Cooke passed away.
As I said, it was not to knock you.
Hey the same could be said for the Miami Dolphins – poke a fork – they are done for the year!
