We don’t need high-speed rail, we need cargo rail. If the truck had to pay for their roads as the trains do, the long-haul trucks would be off the roads, and many lives would be saved.
Anon:
Might be the first thing I’ve ever agreed with you about. High-speed commuter rail on the European model would be great except for one thing — Americans won’t use it. We have a different culture than Europe or Japan. Part of that culture has to do with our love of our personal automobiles. We’re not going to give them up, so the focus should be on making them run cleaner and more energy efficiently. We’re not wedded to the internal combustion engine. Americans will be a perfectly happy to drive electric cars, as soon as they go 100 mph and look cool. That isn’t much to ask for.
“Americans will be a perfectly happy to drive electric cars, as soon as they go 100 mph and look cool.”
What is it with making hybrids looks stupid, anyway?
I’m not sure. It may be a tree-hugger thing. Driving an ugly car makes them feel virtuous. Isn’t going to work for the general public.
and this is actually the kind of thinking that keeps US from having a culture like Eur and Asia. yes lets make better cars that will be hard for people with bad credit or anything else to get, that will fix the transportaion issue. lets also base a big chunk of the economy on the sales of these vehicles so when the economy crashes again we can close up shop and lay 1000’s off. it should be apparent that the US has too much pride and refuses to do things like other countries (ie Healthcare) so yeah lets put cleaner cars on the road that still clog up all the major crossings and not solve the issue at all
Nope. We don’t have a culture like Europe or Asia because we are NOT Europe or Asia. You’ve apparently taken the Loony Left position that everyother culture is superior to the U.S. We’re not worse than Europe or Asia or better, we’re DIFFERENT.
That doesn’t really apply to the health care debate, to my mind. That’s a moral question of whether we think the citizens of the U.S. are entitled to the same basic right to health care as people in every other civilized country on the planet.
Taking the train or driving you car isn’t about rights, it’s about lifestyles choices.
Trying to dictate to the public what they’ve decided are the “correct” choices is the eternal downfall of the Left in this country.
Short history lesson, for those who have never cracked a history book.
WE HAD A WAR WITH EUROPE BECAUSE WE DIDN’T WANT TO BE LIKE THEM!
You don’t see Americans swarming to live in Europe, do you? But you see plenty of Europeans applying for and asking to live in the USA. Why do you think that is? Take your time now, this is a hard question!
People that bellyache about how “we need to be like Europeans” have either never lived there, never read history or simply spend too much time trying to look cool sitting outside the Starbucks in Ghent to bother with either!
Seriously?
Americans will never catch on to hybrids until they can get the same acceleration feeling as they get with an ICE. It’s an adrenaline thing for most people. Hybrids are just too quiet and too weak for the average person.
