“Blatantly misleading” McDonnell black radio ad

So says Sen. Louise Lucas and Del. Lionell Spruill. Via The Washington Post blog, we learned that Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell has released a radio ad targeted at the black community. The ad, which is being aired in Hampton Roads,  mentions both former governor Doug Wilder and President Barack Obama. Combined with the endorsement of “Democrat business woman”* Sheila Johnson, the implication is clear. Listen for yourself.

Upon hearing the ad, Lucas and Spruill issued the following statement:

This ad is blatantly misleading and a shameful attempt to dupe people into thinking Bob McDonnell supports the President.  It would be laughable if it weren’t clear that he was trying to lure voters into thinking he would be a partner and friend to our President and a good steward of Virginia’s future.  When Creigh Deeds stood with Mark Warner and Tim Kaine to make record investments in education, Bob McDonnell voted no.  His education policies would rob much needed funding from Virginia classrooms and leave children with fewer books and teachers.  His election would erode nearly a decade of progress here in Virginia.

What they said.

* – Only a Republican would call herself a “Democrat business woman.”

UPDATE: The Richmond Free Press today endorsed Creigh Deeds.

Creigh Deeds is an authentic, decent man, with moderate sensibilities.  With a self-effacing demeanor that often defies the hype found in much of today’s politics, Sen. Deeds is a real, unpretentious, regular guy who takes responsibility for what he says and does.

  1. Next, they will roll out the old, “We are the Party of Lincoln…” That is always good for a few laughs.

It is really wrong to characterize the Republican Party as hating African Americans; they hate everybody who is not just like them. Those who remain in the Republican Party are nothing more than xenophobes and fascists. They hate others who do not agree with them and they think that it is perfectly OK for the USA to imprison citizens without trial and torture people, as long as none of that gets turned against them.

That is why the Republicans are so scared now. They know quite well what Bush and his henchmen did, and now they fear those same techniques will be turned against them by the Obama Administration.

It is sickening to hear Limbaugh and Hannity crying about LIBERTY now, when they were so silent during the Bush regime, as government agencies simply ignored our Constitution and visited permanent harm to our own People.

While there may be an occasional Republican who runs for a local office who earns the approval of the citizens, Americans must never again trust the Republicans to lead our nation. Their leadership is corrupt and is a pawn for international conglomerates.

    1. You mean like those Republicans who PROMISED to “abolish the car tax”(I still have mine and its gone up) and oh yes, lets not forget the Republican promise to “lower taxes and keep government small by making it efficient”!!!! Then the Virginia Republicans with a majority in the House and Senate gave us the TWO BIGGEST TAX INCREASES IN VIRGINIA HISTORY, and the state budget grew by more than 125%! You mean those “fiscal conservative” Republicans???? The old legal doctrine (look it up) of “Dirty Hands” more than applies to you republicans pointing the finger of “tax increases” in this discussion! Gimmmeee a break!

      1. Wait, I forgot the “smaller government” Republicans who gave us not only MORE government with that unconstitutional regional taxing authority, but more taxes and fee’s(really taxes)to burden the hard working people of Virginia. Honestly, you’re in no position to be pointing fingers of blame at anyone!

    2. Give me a break…. a fiscal conservative is one who pays the bills. It is not you ideologues who worship at the alter of tax cuts and passing off your responsibilities to your children and grandchildren.

Republicans are the most fiscally irresponsible party in the history of the planet (only 6000 years for the anti-science gop).

Sigh… the Clinton years when Greenspan claimed our biggest problem was were going to retire the entire debt of the federal government and taking the option of government bonds our of our savings and investment economy. Whew, the gop saved us from that fate.

  2. Back to the issue at hand, it shows a lot of contempt for African-American voters to believe they’d fall for this. McDonnell never supported anything that Obama OR Doug Wilder ever did.

  3. Black voters need to wake up and make these democratic politicans earn their vote, by improving the communities that black voters live and work in. The black vote is taken for granted by the democrats and the people need to wake up and realize this.

  4. Well, the Justice Dept. has just ruled that Blacks in Kinston are too stupid to vote unless the ballot tells them which party the candidates belong to. This is far less egregious.
