ALL sexual relationships are equal?
Goodness, you don’t let go, do you?
On that note, ALL zygotes?
Human ones, yes.
Why just the zygotes of humans?
Because I don’t know of any others’ being systematically murdered.
You use pesticides or certainly know people who do. That is systematically wiping out particular species inclusive of their offspring and zygotes.
Humans all the time convert land for our use and deprive species of their habitat. That’s a pretty systematic way of getting rid of them. We did that with bison for sure.
Copy and paste the marriage laws, find & replace “marriage” with “civil union” and problem is solved. Religious right can’t complain because gays aren’t getting married and gays can’t complain because they have all the legal rights that they rightfully deserve. They can call it marriage all they want, but just to shut the other side up, they need to compromise and let it be called a civil union in the legal text. This is really a non-issue, what other people want to do doesn’t affect me, once they get the rights they deserve this issue needs to dissapear. Gays need to get over the fact that they are different and some people don’t like them. Making it an extra felony on top of assault to call someone a fag and knock them out because for whatever reasons is not the road we need to go down. If I got in a fight with someone and they called me a dirty Jew, I would certainly not want them prosecuted for an additional felony like my corrupt brethren at the ADL would love to see enacted.
The real issue is, what are the rights of others in their responses to these “marriages”? Will religious charities be forced to hire homosexuals? Will religious landlords be forced to rent to “married” homosexual couples? Will religious adoption agencies be forced to place children with homosexual couples? Will business owners be forced to provide benefits for same-sex spouses?
I don’t think religious institutions will be forced to hire homosexuals. They may have to make a choice on whether they want to accept that as a condition of public funds though.
Are there a lot of landlords that are using their religious beliefs to dictate who they will rent to? Even still, I’d be interested in the scripture that instructs Christians to deny people housing.
Currently business are more often offering benefits to domestic partners as a way to attract an retain talent. I don’t see what the difference would be.
Religious institutions should not be getting public funds anyway.
If there is even one such landlord, his freedom of religion, and his property rights, should prevail.
Finally, the difference is that they would be FORCED to provide such benefits.
Agreed on your first point. So no threat to religious institutions.
I don’t understand how denying someone the right to discriminate limits their private property rights as a landlord. They own property to collect rents. Where do the line end there? No divorcees? No unmarried couples? No unwed mothers? And if they are fully capable of paying the rent and not messing up the property, how exactly is the landlord harmed? And you sidestep the point on where religious doctrine mandates denying housing to anyone. Failing some demonstration of that, it cannot be an imposition on free expression of religion.
Forced? I don’t think they would be allowed to discriminate if benefits were offered to other couples. But they are free to change their benefit programs at any time.
And you equate them with humans?
They produce via sexual reproduction. These other species have zygotes and you said you knew of no other zygotes being systematically murdered. So, here you are. Another set of zygotes that requires your attention. Sexual reproduction is sexual reproduction, right? We were talking about protecting zygotes after you clarified that you are not concerned with gametes.
This is so way off topic though (and I don’t want to get in trouble). The essence of it is this. I think your dictates about abortion and gay marriage stem from your religious belief. But why should your religious beliefs or interpretation of scripture govern me? And do your beliefs about the intrinsic value of something necessarily make it so?
It is THEIR property. If you do not like their choices of whom they rent to, buy a property and rent it yourself.
Mouse,
You said “And you equate them with humans?” YES I DO! Some religions have respect for all forms of life… Do you need to be reminded to “Do unto others…”
Try practicing humanity sometime. You might just develop a conscience.
Right. So you oppose spraying for mosquitoes to prevent malaria? You oppose spraying for tsetse flies to prevent sleeping sickness? You also must oppose all use of antibiotics.
