I’m guessing that the press release I received from The Virginia Organizing Project had this video in mind.
Virginia Beach, Va –The Virginia Organizing Project along with Health Care for America Now and local community members will be visiting Congressman Glenn Nye’s Virginia Beach office on Friday, March 26 at noon to remind the Congressman that there is more at stake with health care reform legislation than his political career. The group will present Nye’s staff with statistics on the local benefits of health care reform along with a medal to give the Congressman the courage to fight harder next time for the people of his district.
If it worked for the Lion in the Wizard of Oz, maybe it will work for Congressman Nye.
The remainder of the press release is below the fold.
Local residents will highlight the personal benefits they will experience now that health care reform has passed:
- Matt Masterson of Virginia Beach will no longer fear for the health of his son with Diabetes who has been discriminated against due to pre-existing conditions.
- College student Amber Stanley (21) of Virginia Beach will be able to stay on her parent’s health insurance plan until she is 26.
- Mildred Nichols of Virginia Beach (80) will get help with her $100/month prescriptions and will no longer be stuck in the Medicare Part D donut hole.
WHO: Virginia Organizing Project, health care reform supporters
WHAT: Congressman Nye: Where Was Your Courage? Event
WHERE: Congressman Glenn Nye’s Hampton Roads office
4772 Euclid Rd., Suite E

What do they say about great minds? The Cowardly Lion first came to my mind too when I got this press release yesterday. Bwaaa!!!
Unfortunately, I had to explain the reference to somebody who has never seen the Wizard of Oz.
The federal government is NOT responsible for our personal well-being.
If your child got diabetes while you had insurance, and that insurance company dropped you, sue the insurance company.
Were insurance companies forbidden to keep young adults on their parent’s insurance plans? If not, then why did they not offer that? Cost? Then the cost of the parents’ insurance will go up by the requisite amount, and Amber has gained nothing.
Medicare Part D did not exist before W. What did people like Mildred do before that?
I’ll tackle the Med Pt D part: some of these folks had separate prescription drug coverage that they gave up in order to participate in it. That, combined with the lure of lower premiums (which only lasted about a year or two) got a lot of people to sign up for it.
What? People got duped by the “public option”?
Actually, no. The “public option” as referred to in the HCR conversations was that the government would offer insurance alongside private insurers. For Medicare Pt D, it was all private insurers. Which is why many have seen Med Pt D as a boon for insurance companies.
Vivian,
-That, combined with the lure of lower premiums (which only lasted about a year or two) got a lot of people to sign up for it.
You have got to be kidding me, you are so nieve and partisan
So, who’s paying for Medicare Part D? The government, the insured, or both?
Why did the lower premiums only last a couple of years?
Just saw on Wikipedia that “Even with the anticipated increase, average 2009 premiums will be 37% lower than the $44 premium that was projected for 2009 when the program was established in 2003.”
So the projection was available when people signed up, the donut hole was known, and premiums did NOT go up as much as expected. What are they complaining about?
Keep it up, Warren, we need to understand WHY you’re so offended that insurance companies will have to keep (some) of their promises. What exactly do you have against people getting health care?
Nothing at all. What I oppose is the government saying they MUST do so. What I oppose is the government forcing some people to pay for others.
.
We have the right to own guns. Would you favor FORCING people to buy a gun and take training classes in its use? It would save a lot of money in police officers, since statistics show that the more people who legally own guns, the lower the violent crime rates. Would you favor taking money from some people so that others could get a gun and training from the government?
No-one is offended that insurance companies will have to keep their promises. What offends people is FORCING people to buy something they do not want at an inflated price, so that by being overcharged, others can pay less than they schould.
Also, people are offended that money will be taken from some people to subsidize others. Still others are offended taht becuase they think money will be taken from them to subsidize abortion. Remember, executive orders apply only to the federal government, and executive orders cannot nullify federal law.
Is health care a right? Certainly. So the government cannot stop one form getting it. Nor can government stop a law-abiding citizen from going to church, publishing a newletter, or buying a gun. However, would you support forcing everyone to go to church, building people churches with others money, buying printing equipment with others’ money, or buying guns and giving training to those who cannot affort it?
@theap:
It would help if a) you could spell and b) if you could point out what is partisan in that statement.
Let me remind you of my comment policy as you contributed nothing to the conversation other than an attack, which is not allowed here.
The insured is paying the premiums, although I am aware that certain low income individuals get help.
I can only assume it was because the costs exceeded what the insurers anticipated. The cheapest plans cost about $13 a month in 2007, while the cheapest ones now cost about $29.
Actually, the donut hole was not known. It wasn’t until well afterwards that people knew about it, and it is why this legislation closes it.
And I note that you conveniently have not acknowledged that Medicare Part D is not the same as a public option.
I freely admit to that error!
If someone did not know about the “donut hole,” then it was their own fault. It was widely covered at the time.

Warren/narceleb – please pick a handle and stick with it.
Sorry — not trying to play sock-puppet. I’m trying to get off verizon and move to gmail. Unbeknownst to me, gmail is somehow connected to this blog, and put in my gmail handle, not my name.
THis is the first time I’ve used gmail, so Im royally confused!
Again, sorry!
Hmm – I wonder if that’s a problem with OpenID and not Gmail? I have the same trouble when posting to a Blogger blog.
In any case – thanks for letting us know.
OpenID? Don’t know that one. I’m using gravitar, and the verizon address was my primary on there. One step at a time!
