Opinion, please: economics and personal finance course

The Virginia Department of Education has released a draft (pdf) of the framework of the Economics and Personal Finance course to be taught in Virginia’s schools beginning with the 2011-2012 school year.

The resulting Curriculum Framework addresses concepts and principles that are important to economics at the macro level, but also direct attention to understanding and skills that students need to be knowledgeable consumers in many areas of daily life, such as further education, career preparation, major purchases, credit and debt, and savings and investments.

Reading through the document last night, I found the 18 standards quite ambitious – and I wonder how many adults out here have the knowledge that the DOE is going to try to impart to the students. Nevertheless, it appears to be a valiant effort.

The proposed framework is open for public comment for 30 days. Send comments to econperfinancecf@doe.virginia.gov, fax them to (804) 786-1597, or mail them to Dr. Beverly Thurston, history and social science coordinator, Office of Middle and High School Instruction, Virginia Department of Education, P.O. Box 2120, Richmond, VA 23218-2120.

  1. “I wonder how many adults out here have the knowledge that the DOE is going to try to impart to the students.”

THat’s the POINT, isn’t it — that so few people have this knowledge that is essential for our current economic environment?
