OK, I’ll admit it: when I saw the performance of “Pants on the Ground” on American Idol, the first person that came to mind was Norfolk Del. Algie Howell. (If you’ve not seen the video, check it out here.) Howell put forth a bill – known as the “Droopy Drawers” bill – back in 2005 to address the problem of “looking like a fool with your pants on the ground.”
According to a Daily Press article, students at Kecoughtan High School in Hampton have taken up the cause, urging fellow students to pull up their pants. And Del. Howell couldn’t be more pleased.
Howell stopped by Kecoughtan last week to laud students for their efforts.
“It’s fantastic,” he said Tuesday. “I was just so happy to see young people take the lead in this.”
He invited about 25 students to appear before legislators in Richmond on April 21. Howell said he will introduce the students from the floor and commend them for the campaign.
I really thought this fad would be over by now. The one with the low-riding Levis, that I experienced in junior high school back in the 1970s, passed by pretty quickly. That this “fashion statement’ has endured so long speaks to something else.
Although I’m not sure what.
