American Idol results 03/31/10: Down to 9

With soul/R&B as the genre for Tuesday night’s performances, the contestants mostly struggled. Only a couple of them stood out – Crystal, of course, and Lee – while others were downright awful – Tim, of course, and, surprisingly, DiDi.

Crystal is simply heads and shoulders above the rest. Last night, she reminded me of Carole King. I was glad to see her get from behind the guitar for a performance, but as much fun as she appeared to have, she’s probably more comfortable with it.

If Lee turns in a few more performances like he did last night, he’s definitely going to be a contender.

I still think the best voice on the show is Siobhan, but she had a rough time last night. I’m guessing that she has enough fans out there, so she managed to be safe.

First to take a seat in the bottom three was Katie. She didn’t do badly last night – certainly not as bad as some of the others – but she did take a risk trying to sing an Aretha Franklin song. This is the second week in a row she’s ended up in the bottom three.

Joining Katie was DiDi. Her performance of “What Becomes of a Broken Hearted” last night was just painful.

As expected, the third member of the bottom three was Tim. This guy took on Anita Baker’s “Sweet Love.” Simply horrible.

Katie, once again, was the first of the bottom 3 to be declared safe. Give it a couple of weeks, though. I expect Katie’s luck is going to run out.

VTFW saved Tim another week, leaving DiDi to sing one last time to try to garner the judges’ save. Unfortunately for her, the judges aren’t ready to use the once-a-season save.  We haven’t heard the last of her, since she will be on the Idol tour as a member of the Top 10. And with her talent, I suspect she has a rewarding career ahead of her.

The ongoing animosity between Simon and Ryan is getting old. The producers need to do something about it. It’s bad enough that this is a relatively weak group of contestants; it’s no fun watching the two of them snipe at each other.

I’d like to renew my objection to the various performances on the show. Tonight’s one-hour show could have easily been just a half an hour, if they had eliminated the performances by Rueben, Usher and P Diddy. Seriously – that’s not why I watch the show. Heck, I’d rather watch the corny group Ford commercials than this stuff.

  1. I agree with the feud between Ryan and Simon. Unfortunately, I think the producers probably are actually encouraging it because they think it’s something the viewers want to see (kind of like how the audience always boos Simon the moment he says something that could be remotely considered negative).

The sense I’ve gotten from Katie and Aaron is that they both have decent voices, but could really use a few more years to let them develop.

    1. Agree on Katie and Aaron. I got called an “ageist” on Twitter the other night for saying something similar. Truth is, it takes time for voices to mature. Katie is 17, Aaron is 16. They will be much better in another 7 or 8 years.

  2. Thanks for the update. (Our DVD ended the show`a split second before the announcement of who was booted.) This is the first season we’ve watched the show. And except for the loooooong elimination shows and the silly mentoring segments, it’s kind of fun. I see why people get hooked on it. So this is a weak group, huh?

    1. The show ran over. I learned the hard way to set my DVR to record a few minutes over to avoid missing out the end.

Yes, this is a weak group.
