American Idol results 04/14/10: two go home

Because the judges used their once-per-season save last week, two contestants were eliminated on Wednesday’s show.

Tuesday night saw the nine remaining competitors take on the music of Elvis, while being “mentored” by Season 8 runnerup Adam Lambert. Um, OK. Seriously – shouldn’t the mentor be more than one season removed from being on the show? Besides, it seemed to me that all of his mentoring consisted of trying to convince the contestants to act like him.

In any event, there were some really good performances – despite the mentoring – Tuesday night. And, of course, some not so good ones.

My favorite at this stage in the game remains Siobhan. A little quirky, I think she’s the best singer in the competition. The judges don’t quite know what to make of her – and she doesn’t know herself 😉 But her voice, her control, her range – all things to marvel at.

First to be voted off – rather quickly, I might add – was Andrew. His lackluster performance last night – despite having one of the better voices – was a killer. A slow version of “Hound Dog” put us all to sleep.

In between the announcement of the first and second person to leave the show, we were “treated” to a duet by Season 7 performer Brooke White and some dude. Horrible.

Then we had a performance by Lambert. Another time-waster I could have done without.

Standing on the stage at the end were Big Mike, Katie and the choice of Vote for the Worst, Tim Urban. As bad as he is, Urban was safe. Big Mike sang “In the Ghetto” Tuesday night – and the judges loved it. Interestingly enough, he wasn’t familiar with the song. I thought everybody had covered it. Big Mike was the beneficiary of the judges’ save last week – perhaps that’s why they lavished their praise on him, in order to protect him. It worked.

Seventeen-year-old Katie was eliminated from the competition. Don’t be surprised if she’s not back again in a couple of years, once her voice matures.

Next week, we have a real mentor: Alicia Keys.  Ought to be a good show.

  1. Vivian,
you still don’t like Adam. I thought he had a great performance especially with the lasers and lights. Should be an all woman final- the best two voices.

    1. Nope. Laser lights and a bunch of smoke don’t make it a “great performance” for me.

It should be Crystal and Siobhan in the final but I’m not counting on it.

  2. I’d really like to see Idol’s detailed viewer demographics. I took a look at this last year and realized the obvious–every Idol winner with the exception of Arizonan Jordin Sparks has been from the South. All the voice or talent in the world isn’t going to overcome the predilections of the voting public. And that, sadly, leaves Casey, Big Mike and Tim the Enchanter as this year’s choices.

  3. Whatever Ryan Seacrest is on, I’d like to try it. Dancing with an audience member during one of the songs was totally bizzare.

  4. I have only watched this season of Idol twice and was bored both times, I switched, and have not turned back. I think it has run it course and it may be time for a break.

    1. I think this will be the final season. The combination of poor candidates, the loss of Paula Abdul and the impending loss of Simon Cowell lead me to think it’s over.
