It has been 42 years ago this month – April 4, 1968 – that an assassin’s bullet took the life of civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A memorial commemorating his life and work is planned for the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The project is expected to cost $120 million, and $106 million has been raised so far.
The last dollars of any fundraising campaign are the hardest to get. If you have a spare $14 million, BuildtheDream.org would be grateful for the check π But if you are like me – no, I don’t have $14 mil – there are a number of other ways you can contribute:
- Download the MLK Memorial Toolbar. For every search you make using it, five cents will be donated to the Washington, DC Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation.
- Text MLK to 20222 to donate $5, which will be added to your mobile phone bill
- Donate online here and receive a “Build the Dream” wristband and lapel pin for contributions of $5 or more.
The memorial is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2011. Help make this a reality.

Was just looking at my pictures from the groundbreaking the other day. Looking forward to the opening.
