Another Confederate flag flap

A Civil War-themed bar with a mural depicting the Confederate flag is being painted over.

The mural has a United States flag on one side and a Confederate flag on the other, along with stars, an eagle and other adornments.

The idea, Knox said, was to depict the separation of the Union and the Confederacy, and then the reuniting of the two sides.

I wish I could have seen a picture of the mural. In the proper context – a battle scene, for example – the display of the two flags shouldn’t have been a problem. In that context, it would be hard to argue that this was anything other than history.

I’m having trouble with the concept, though, if it only depicted the two flags. If you have to explain what something represents, then you’ve lost some of the folks who may have been supportive.

  1. To put it in its entire context, Spotsylvania Towne Center (Spotsylvania Mall for old hands) is on the southern end of a massive tourism complex called Celebrate Virginia — designed to drive tourism into Fredericksburg and capitalize on the battlefields, etc. Not a small thing.

I wonder what will be more controversial — the Confederate Battle Flag, or a oversized Virginia state seal……….
