When does a 3-3 vote equal a majority?

When that vote is cast by members of the Norfolk School Board.

“The board did vote in open session, 3 to 3, and with that vote, said that Dr. Bentley had our full support to come in and work with us as our new superintendent,” Tonelson said.

Forget for a minute whether the vote was case in a open session – a reporter there says it wasn’t. But come on – just how does a tie vote equal a win? (Except, of course, in World Cup Soccer.)

Council is choosing four members – of seven – of the school board today. Can they please pick some folks who know how to count?

UPDATE:  The School Board held another vote today and voted 5-0 to hire Bentley. Council reappointed two of three incumbents, plus two new members.

  1. Makes more sense than 59 out of 100 votes is a loss that is the sweet spot of republican’t obstruction, the US Senate.

  2. Stick to the issue…this is a community issue, neither republican nor democrat. It is about whether there is competent leadership of our local school board which has a hugh impact on the children in our community and our community’s economic competiveness. Its not about political party affliations or shennanigans.
