Without question, if this man were not in the United States, he would not have killed the nun. He was here illegally.
The author makes a clear error: “Outrage should be focused on the failure of the local prosecutor and the courts to hold this man for the maximum term, or one year, allowable for a second-offense, drunken-driving conviction rather rather than the failure of federal officials to deport him.”
This illegal immigrant was not in local custody. He was remanded to the federal system for deportation, and the federal system let him go. THAT is why people are outraged.
We are not looking for “extended police powers to enforce immigration laws.” The police already have the authority to arrest people for federal crimes. Our drug laws are federal crimes. Kidnapping is a federal crime. The state and local police enforce those laws. Why should they not enforce immigration law, too?
