Steele on Smith: “He’s from the community”

Ryan Nobles interviewed RNC chair Michael Steele who was in town stumping for Chuck Smith, the Republican challenging longtime Democrat Bobby Scott in the 3rd Congressional District. Steele must have been using his talking points shortcut (about 1:06 of the video):

Yeah, he’s from the community, alright. Just not the community where he wants to serve. Check out the first 57 seconds of this video.

  1. Not only does Chuck Smith NOT live in the 3rd district that he,….at this time,….wants to represent, but not long ago, he WAS running for the GOP nomination in the SECOND district where he actually DOES live.

Well, first he was “for” running in the 2nd and then dropped out when he was “against” running in the 2nd. Then Chuck Smith was “for” running in the 2nd for the GOP nomination against Scott Rigell, but didn’t quite resume the campaign. Maybe because, DJ Spiker of Bearing Drift wrote an article asking him not to run in the 2nd. See the link:

    http://bearingdrift.com/2010/03/11/chuck-smith-re-entering-va-02-district-nomination-race-why/

In that article, you will see a comment speaking of a conversation with Chuck Smith and reasons why Chuck thought about re-entering the nomination for the 2nd.

“Lee, I’ve talked with Chuck knowing him from City Committee, and he said that he feels that the Lord may be calling him to get back in the race. I asked him if this had anything to do with Rigell and he reiterated that it did not.

If a man feels that God is telling him to do something, hard to argue with it.” -Bryan R.” *BD article comment linked to*

Chuck Smith evidently decided he was “for” running in the third district against an entrenched Bobby Scott and splitting votes with Libertarian James Quigley AFTER he was “for”, and then “against” running, then “for”, then “against” again running in the 2nd district. Will Chuck “John Kerry” Smith please show some consistent direction? Sure, what we need in Congress is another guy that perpetually waffles! Does that mean a continual compromise of values for the sake of reaching an end? Does it call into question “values” and any claims to being “open” and worthy of trust?

Apparently Chuck, and perhaps God, had a few changes in view on where, and if he should run.

    The questions remain:
Chuck Smith, which district do you really want to represent? Or do you just want to be a politician so badly it doesn’t matter where?

What was the motivation to enter into a race against a power like the Bobby Scott and split votes with James Quigley? In such a difficult situation where it will be impossible to win, who persuaded you? A favor for 3rd District GOP Chair, Mike Wade? Was this decision also of divine inspiration?

The previous GOP candidates were pushed aside for the coronation of THIS guy?

I wish Mr. Steele was asked to clarify which community he thought Smith was from. If the Republicans are going to waste their money on Chuck Smith in a situation like this, I have to wonder how much credibilty Republicans hope to have with fiscal issues in Congress. “Open the vault” Bush, spending a little less than Pres. Obama doesn’t make for much of an arguement, either. As pointed out in another BD article, “We Suck Less”, is not a compelling reason to elect you over the other guy.

Obviously, I am supporting James Quigley for Congress in the 3rd. He lives in the 3rd district, like his opponent Bobby Scott. Unlike Chuck Smith, that lives in Virginia Beach’s second district. James Quigley believes in principle(not empty rhetoric), that we have as a nation, been fiscally irresponsible, and have done damage to the current and future financial health of the United States,it’s citizens, and their children.

Bush’s 2nd term was horrible. Pres. Obama is already being held accountable for failures of his own. Just look at the polling data for Obama. Obviously, the public no longer buys the idea that the entire mess we are in is Bush’s fault. Obviously, polling data shows that many hold Pres. Obama and the Democratic Congress to blame for even worse debt, spending, and especially unemployment numbers. So, we didn’t stop the Bush spending, we increased it. Despite huge draw downs, we are still in Iraq and suffering casualties as we increase activity in Afghanistan. The growth of government under Bush wasn’t halted, it was expanded. I fail to see the “Change” that was promised. I really just see Bush policies on steroids. The biggest difference I see is in views on other religions, moral issues, and which “team”(political party)the guy is from.

To follow the same path, or just go faster, while expecting a different result, is a demonstration of insanity. If you want a REAL change towards fiscal responsibility and individual freedoms, you should consider voting for James Quigley.

Let’s get something straight. The House of Representatives writes the budget. The President can sign it or veto it. So, then, let us look at the budget deficits while the Democrats were in charge of the House, and when the Republicans were.

The Democrats were in charge for 40 year, from 1954 to 1994. So they wrote the budgets for 1955 through 1994. The budget deficit averaged 2.17% of GDP during those years. The last 21 were particularly bad. In the first 19, the average was 0.64%. The deficit jumped from 0.41% in 1974 to 3.25% the next year. Between 1974 and 1995, the average was 3.55% of GDP.

The Republicans controlled the House from 1995 through 2006. The deficit dropped from 2.21% in FY95 to a low of -2.37% in FY00. It rose again to a peak of 3.48% in FY04. Then, with wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the deficit declined to a low of 1.14% of GDP in FY07. The average of the deficits for FY96 through FY07 was 0.81% of GDP.

Then, the Democrats took over. In FY08, they nearly tripled the deficit from FY07 — 1.14% to 3.18%. They DID triple it in FY09, when they got the deficit to 9.91% of GDP. Obviously, the numbers for FY10 are not in yet, but the estimates are 10.64% of GDP.

    1. “Let’s get something straight. The House of Representatives writes the budget. The President can sign it or veto it. So, then, let us look at the budget deficits while the Democrats were in charge of the House, and when the Republicans were.” – Warren

Then obviously Warren, you see no connection to things like “Obamacare” to the President it is derogatorily named for (Obama). I guess all the spending is the fault of Nancy Pelosi and our current President has no sway in the matter. No harm in re-electing Obama then?

I do consider myself a part of the Tea Party movement and a Tea Party supporter. The one criticism of the Tea Party that I can not refute revolves around the amassing of strength now that the President is a Democrat. There were people pointing to Bush’s spending and his contribution to “Big Government”, but a large portion of the Tea Party does consist of Republicans. For SOME REASON they found their voice and funneled money through Tea Party channels after we had a Democrat in the Presidency. A convenient target that party discipline would not hamper.

The total BS label of racism that the Democrats throw at the Tea Party will eventually die. No matter what anyone says, that label will wither and die as it has no basis in fact. The few kooks that really are racist in the Tea Party are the exception to the rule. Just as the late KKK Byrd and sitting VP Biden are exceptions. Fire up the YouTube videos of Biden and let’s talk again about racist elements, ok? And by the way, those are HIS words and not some guy holding a sign claiming to be a Biden follower.

Unfortunately, the critics are right about silence as Bush made such a negative impact during his last term. Sure Libertarians and true fiscal conservatives in the GOP did cry out, but love for fiscal responsibility didn’t rise with such passion until President Obama was elected. How interesting and unfortunate as I have to apologize for the Tea Party in that regard and welcome the Tea Party’s “Better late than never” presence. So, we have to struggle harder to persuade on behalf of the Tea Party because of that white washing of Bush truths.

If you are going to maintain that Bush did not affect the size of government or its spending, then you are either drinking the kool-aid or just fingerpointing at Bush’s co-conspirators that he did nothing to stop. Not exactly a VETO pen. More like a rubber stamp!

I would agree with you that Congress and Obama are at this point to blame for a terrible expansion of our economic woes. That said, again, “We Suck Less”, fails to impress as an arguement.

  3. “Let’s get something straight. The House of Representatives writes the budget. The President can sign it or veto it. So, then, let us look at the budget deficits while the Democrats were in charge of the House, and when the Republicans were.”

It would be fascinating to see how government worked (and, more likely, didn’t work) if the budget process actually were this simple, or if it worked anything like that at all. In reality, the President always submits his budget first. This budget is the basis for all discussion about funding levels during committee hearings that lead up to adopting a Congressional Budget Resolution, which itself is far-less detailed than the Presidential Budget in that it only authorizes a certain level of budget authority for each agency. Also, because it’s a concurrent resolution and not an actual bill, it isn’t submitted to the President for his signature; it’s rather used withing Congress when creating appropriations bills.

It works like this because the Secretaries in the President’s cabinet are each responsible for the daily operations of the executive-branch agencies within their respective departments, so they’re in a better position to know how much it costs (for instance) to screen passengers and baggage at an airport and why. I’m not sure what airport security would like like if Congress just sent the TSA a check at the beginning of every fiscal year for some variable amount determined by quibbling members of the United States House, but I am sure I’d probably take the Greyhound bus a lot more often.
