What the Voters Want: A View from the Grass Seats

Put simply, President Obama was elected to permanently change a corrupt political system, not master it by delegating his leadership to Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid. For us in the grass seats, this has not been the Obama Administration, but the Pelosi-Reid administration. We now must fight a desperate fight to quell voter outrage over still-born legislation which doesn’t begin to solve our most serious community problems and which reflects the most egregious flaws in the current system.

Amen, brother. Amen.

  1. I find it hard to take seriously a man who calls himself a chair. Then he follows that with, “For the first time in my life, I recognized a transformational leader….” How the heck did he do that? Obama had never run anything. (The joke is that he will not release his medical records because he has never even run a fever.)

Now, some of his criticism of the Republican Party is warranted, especially the part about not caring. They, like the Democrats, just want power. However, the part that “From 2000-2006, with total Republican control of the government for the first time in 80 years, the Republicans quintupled the national debt, set a record number of record-breaking budget deficits….” is just wrong. Bush did not take office until January, 2001. Republicans did pass the FY2001 budget, that was signed by President Clinton. So the Republicans had FY2002 through FY2007. Here are the budget deficits as a percent of GDP:

    FY2002 1.48%
    FY2003 3.39%
    FY2004 3.48%
    FY2005 2.52%
    FY2006 1.85%
    FY2007 1.14%

As you can see, the after the ramp-up for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, the deficit started to come down. Then, the Democrats won the House and Senate and took over the budget-writing process:

    FY2008 3.18%
    FY2009 9.91%
    FY2010 10.64% (estimated)

The surpluses of FY1998-2001 occurred when Congress was run by the Republicans and the President was a Democrat. If the Republicans win control next month, we will have that situation again.
