Norfolk Ward 7 10/20 fundraising reports

Monday was the deadline for filing campaign finance reports for the period 10/1 - 10/20. Earl Fraley, who was endorsed by The Virginian-Pilot Monday, raised $1,927 in cash from 44 donors, the largest of which was $204. His major expenditures are for ads. I'm still not seeing the final cost of his yard signs. He … Continue reading Norfolk Ward 7 10/20 fundraising reports

Pilot endorsements: VB in, 8 of 10

So I'm 4 for 5 on the Virginia Beach City Council endorsements. The Virginian-Pilot endorsed all of my predictions save one: that of Tanya Bullock in the Princess Anne district.  The paper consider incumbent Barbara Henley to be a critical voice on council and wished that Bullock had run for an at-large seat. And based … Continue reading Pilot endorsements: VB in, 8 of 10

A dead heat in the 2nd CD

According to a newly released poll, the race in the 2nd Congressional District is a virtual tie, with Republican challenger Scott Rigell at 41.5% and Democratic incumbent Glenn Nye at 41%.  Independent Kenny Golden is at 5% with 12% of voters undecided. The goose isn't cooked yet: According to Nate Silver, it seems Nye has … Continue reading A dead heat in the 2nd CD

Monday afternoon quarterbacking: Skins win ugly

Thanks to Steve for the reminder about the Redskins' win.  Was that ugly or what? For a while there, it felt as if whoever ended up with the ball last was going to win. A gift is a gift, though, and a win is a win. Thanks to the Chicago Bears who were slightly more … Continue reading Monday afternoon quarterbacking: Skins win ugly

The partisan divide

This Gallup graph has been making the rounds of websites, prompting an interesting discussion about what it means. Over at The American Prospect, the idea is that the change is connected to the election of a Democratic president. The Economist follows up on that post by saying that things have not really changed when it … Continue reading The partisan divide

Pilot endorsements: 4 for 5 so far

Beginning Saturday and continuing through today, The Virginian-Pilot has endorsed in five races. My predictions have been accurate in all but one of those. Incumbents Bobby Scott (3rd) and Randy Forbes (4th) were endorsed Saturday. Both merit a return to Washington, but with the expectation that they will make greater use of their substantial seniority … Continue reading Pilot endorsements: 4 for 5 so far

Norfolk city manager to retire

In a letter to the Mayor and members of council, Norfolk city manager Regina Williams announced today her intention to retire on January 14, 2011. The letter is below the fold. Williams will have served for twelve years - seven more than I ever expected her to when she came to Norfolk. During her tenure, … Continue reading Norfolk city manager to retire

Predictions on Pilot endorsements

Recall, if you will, what Don Luzzatto said about the endorsements at The Virginian-Pilot. Using that as a guide, here are my predictions of their endorsements. It should be noted that even though I write an opinion column for the editorial page, I was not privy to the interview and decision-making process. Portsmouth Mayor Elizabeth … Continue reading Predictions on Pilot endorsements

Friday fun: making the rounds

I've gotten this email from several sources over the last few days. Figured I'd share. While walking down the street one day a corrupt Senator was tragically hit by a car and died. His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance. "Welcome to heaven," says St. Peter. "Before you … Continue reading Friday fun: making the rounds
