On the day that their quarterback signed a new five-year deal reportedly worth $78 million (with $40 million guaranteed), the Washington Redskins suffered a defeat not seen almost in the history of the franchise. Out of the gate, the visiting Philadelphia Eagles scored on an 88-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Michael Vick to DeSean Jackson. And it didn’t let up from there. The final score – 59-28 – reflects a bad enough beating but the truth is, it wasn’t that close: the Eagles were up 35-0 after the first play of the second quarter.
Vick set all kinds of records last night, and the League MVP meme has started. Commentator Jon “Chuckie” Gruden, the former coach of Tampa Bay, was absolutely giddy in his praise. Gotta give Vick his props: his play was brilliant. He told the AP:
“I’ve had some great games in my day,” the quarterback said. “But I don’t think I’ve had one quite like this one.”
Meanwhile, the soon-to-be 34-year-old McNabb threw three interceptions. I’ve never been a McNabb fan, even less of one when he was signed to play for the Redskins. As a fan, I’m tired of “rebuilding” the team with these over-the-hill players. The blame for that, of course, rests with the owner.ย I loved Tom Robinson’s description of the McNabb contract:
Anyway, call this re-upping of McNabb what it truly is – a marriage made in mediocrity.
Yep. And the mediocre Redskins find themselves at 4-5, two games out of first place in the NFC East. But hey – we’re ahead of the cellar dwelling Cowboys, right? Small consolation, actually.

Speaking of the Cowboys: I heard a joke at Del. Spruill’s event last week.
A kid gets in trouble at school and the principal wants to send him home. “I’m going to send you home to your mother,” the principal said. “Please don’t,” the kid replied. “Why not?” “Because my mom will beat me.” “So I’ll send you home to your father.” “Please don’t. My father beats me worse.” “So where should I send you?” The kid replies, “To the Cowboys. They don’t beat anybody.” ๐
The thing is, the Cowboys just destroyed the NFC East-leading Giants. If both the Redskins and the Cowboys continue the level of play we saw this weekend, the Redskins will not even have that small consolation.
Unfortunately, you are correct ๐ฆ
I went to bed Sunday night with my fantasy team down 2 points.
After last night, my team won by close to a hundred. Vick put up 49 points by himself.
So, thanks Skins!! See you in TN on Sunday… ๐
Don’t rub it in ๐ฆ
I’ve been calling it the MNF Massacre.
11.15.10
Never forget.
I suspect more such massacres are on the schedule, although maybe not quite as bad as last night.
I’m highly offended at your posting of an insensitive joke making light of the serious issue of child abuse.
Where I come from, getting a whipping (as we called it) for being kicked out of school isn’t child abuse – it was expected. But I get your point. (If it’s any consolation, the person telling the joke the other night was a minister.)
Say what you want about Mick Vick as a person, but as a football player, he’s unique.
It’s like having Barry Sanders playing quarterback.
On several plays last night, he made the Skins look foolish, effortlessly.
You know, while I obviously don’t condone at all what he did, I’m starting to come back around on Vick. I’ll admit that this may in part be a reaction to the widely different standards of enforcement that Vick saw versus what Ben Roethlisberger faced (repeatedly, for much more serious allegations), and I’m still not really in a mindset to forgive sins, but I’m still kind of glad to see someone bouncing back from rock bottom have a good day.
…Or maybe I just needed to find something positive I could latch onto in order to justify continuing to watch the game after halftime.
I gave up at halftime. No way the Skins were coming back from that deficit. They just don’t have the players.
I’ve always thought Vick an awesome, if incomplete, player. Last night, though, he showed a grasp of the game I didn’t think he had. He’s still a gifted athlete, but he used his head.
Steve,
I completely agree.
I’m a die hard Skins fan, but was completely in awe of Vick last night. His performance was flawless and the Eagles offense was exceptional.
“Wade aphilips donated his playbook to Mike Shanahan!”
Or to Kyle.
I just heard this from a friend last night, didn’t catch it myself on Sportscenter but have verified the quote:
Perhaps The Eagles’ DeSean Jackson ought to choose his words a little better. Quoth Jackson: “We were like pit bulls, ready to get out of the cage.”
Uhm….little tasteless methinks.
Power rankings are out …
