The twinning of Norfolk and Tema, Ghana will take place during a series of events scheduled for next week, Monday, November 30 through Saturday, December 4. An earlier event, scheduled for last month, was delayed due to a travel embargo and visa problems.
From the original invitation:
Norfolk Sister City Association, a member of Sister Cities International seeks to foster global understanding, friendship and cooperation through the forging of continuing relationships and the promotion of people-to-people exchanges between Norfolk and its sister cities.
Norfolk City leaders, NSCA Board of Directors and members of the community at large have worked long and hard for many years to identify to the best city with African heritage with which to twin.
Tema is Ghana’s main port city with a population similar to Norfolk’s. It is also the main destination for the Princess Cruise line in Ghana. This represents the first time a Virginia city will be twinned with one from West Africa
The big public event will be held at Waterside on Wednesday, December 1, beginning at 4:30pm. There are other public events on the schedule (below the fold) and all but the VIP dinner are free.
