2012 race for Senate heats up

The Senate seat occupied by Sen. Jim Webb, who hasn’t officially announced his re-election run for 2012 (although I have little doubt that he will), is drawing a number of Republican challengers. Leading the way is the former occupant, George Allen. Making noise about a run is Prince William Board of Supervisors chair Corey Stewart as well as perennial candidate, Del. Bob Marshall.  The latest official entrant is Tea Party candidate Jamie Radtke.

The Republican candidate will be decided by a primary, a decision made by the party’s Central Committee last month. I would expect that tilts the field in favor of Allen, who enjoys high name recognition, a requirement for raising the outrageous sums of money necessary to wage a statewide campaign. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

UPDATE: The Radtke announcement has brought out some interesting information.  Too Conservative has the details here.

  1. Ms. Radke has a tough road in front of her. Hard to go from total unknown to U.S. Senator in a year. Especially with a primary against someone as well known statewide as Allen. You’d think Allen has to be hoping that more people jump into the race to his right, fragmenting that vote. If it’s just him against one Tea Party candidate, he could get upset.

  2. I searched and I couldn’t find a single picture of her with glasses anywhere, yet she wore them on Fox last night. Seems like she’s going for the Sarah Palin look on TV…

She says she has a distaste for career politicians, yet by most measures, she is one. A decade working as a paid staffer and consultant? Seems like a career to me. How can you run against career politicians and at the same time run on the fact that you’ve been paid to do politics for the past 10 years or so? Seems pretty hypocritical to me.

If Radtke’s smart shes got Google alerts with her name and several different qualifiers. Hopefully they trigger some answers.

  3. Haha, only for that interview was I even watching it. In retrospect, it was a waste of time. I’ve been at my mom’s since Christmas and I had to get up at 5 when the kids started rolling in (she runs a daycare, 122 kids and counting), definitely wasn’t a good idea to stay up till 11 for that, although I laughed so hard when I saw her Palin glasses…
