My latest op-ed appeared in this morning’s Virginian-Pilot. It just seemed appropriate, with New Years just around the corner, to offer some civic resolutions.
We all manage to find time to do those things that are important to us, but tend to leave the civic stuff to others. As much as I follow what goes on in Hampton Roads, my trips to the council meetings are rare. Yes, half of the meetings are in the middle of the afternoon, when I usually can’t get away from work. But the other half are in the evening, so until now, I’ve not had an excuse for not attending (that will change in the coming months) other than being forgetful.
I hope others will find a way to fit some civic resolutions into the New Year.
I think we should have a New Year’s resolution challenge. I’ll try to run the Marine Corps Marathon this year. Vivian will try to quit smoking. And Norfolk’s city council will try to stop filling administrative vacancies or board positions during closed-door meetings in the middle of the work-day.
I have a feeling we’ll have a new deputy assistant commissioner of such-and-such sprung on us before Vivian reaches for her lighter or I skip a day of training next year.
And I think you’d be right š¦
Get a referendum for an elected school board on the November ballot. Only 6 more days until I can start collecting signatures.
