The above is the title of my latest op-ed, which appeared in Wednesday’s The Virginian-Pilot.
The “No Labels” movement is about getting things done. It’s not about setting aside party but setting aside partisanship. To be perfectly honest, while I find the idea appealing, I just don’t see it happening. Our system – at the state and national level – of rewarding the party in power makes pursuit of that power the most important thing.
Which is why I prefer local politics. Here in Hampton Roads, the partisanship is mostly below the surface, and generally doesn’t drive the elections, despite the efforts of some to make party an issue. And that seems to be the case in most communities, as this Gallup poll, mentioned in the article, shows. No mention at all of politics as being a reason people feel attached to their communities.
