Aficionados of The West Wing will recognize that Friday is Take Out The Trash Day. The latest release came a bit ago, innocently entitled “City of Norfolk Announces Staffing Changes.” Within the release was a relative bombshell: Police Chief Bruce Marquis will retire effective April 1.
The chief has been under fire lately related to the death of a recruit in training. Also brought to light was some of his credit card spending.
Assistant Chief Sharon Chamberlin will serve as the acting chief while a replacement is being sought. Chamberlin, who has been in the department for 36 years and who I first met a number of years ago, will be the first female in the city’s history to serve as chief. In her time with the department, she has been the first woman promoted to sergeant, lieutenant, captain and assistant chief.
Two other personnel changes were included in the announcement in the Department of Human Services: Anne Odell will become acting director and Mattie Satterfield will become acting Superintendent of the Juvenile Detention Center.
Wow. There was actually something vaguely like accountability in Norfolk’s Police Department.
Huh.
