An interesting quiz from Pew Research. Although I didn’t agree with most of the choices 100% (things are generally more nuanced than the quiz makes out), I’m not surprised with the result π
Β Solid Liberals
14% of the public
What They Believe
- Strongly pro-government and very liberal on a broad range of issues
- Very supportive of regulation, environmental protection and government assistance to the poor
- One of the most secular groups; 59% say that religion is not that important to them
- Supportive of the country’s growing racial and ethnic diversity
- Two-thirds disagree with the Tea Party
Who They Are
- Highly politically engaged
- 75% are Democrats
- Concentrated in the Northeast and West
- 57% are female
- Best educated of the groups: 49% hold at least a bachelor’s degree and 27% have post-graduate experience
- A third regularly listen to NPR, about two-in-ten regularly watch The Daily Show and read The New York Times
- 59% have a passport
- 42% regularly buy organic foods
- 21% are first or second generation Americans
A lot in there that doesn’t describe me: I’ve never bought organic foods π
It always depends on the questions asked: I quizzed staunch conservative.
I’m an economic moderate, social conservative.
Post Modern, whatever the hell that is.
There were several questions worded such as I could have chosen both. Such as #8. On #13, I think I chose neither, there is too much power in the hands of large companies, but they may not be the largest.
But, all in all, a fun Friday exercise.
It is a rather poor quiz. It does not distinguish between legal and illegal immigration, and the differences are tremendous.
There is another question that on one side says something like, “Most people can get ahead through hard work,” and the other said, “Hard work is no guarantee of getting ahead.” BOTH are true. One could work his tail off to grow a business, then have the government come in and impose a 10% tax on his services, and the business collapses.
The one on the environment…. On one side we have, “The government should do whatever it takes,” and the other side is “government has gone too far.” Both can be true there, too. “IT” has not been defined, and there are so many possibilities for the government to go too far that it has in many cases, while it has not gone far enough in others.
And having the government help the poor. Poor in income, or poor in wealth? New high school or college graduates are often “poor,” but will be earning a lot more later.
The biggest problem for the poor now is trying to find a job when the increase in the minimum wage has priced them out of work.
did you lose a couple of posts in the switch over? The one on the Hamilton trial seems to be gone.
Nope – it’s listed under the Recent Posts, just not under the Featured Posts.
I got post modern too. I have to say the quiz is to either/or, black/white. You’re given a choice of absolute positions, truth generally lies in the middle somewhere.
I agree that “things are generally more nuanced than the quiz makes out,” particularly as to the religion/morality question and the immigration question. As to the latter, the quiz seems to indulge the far-Left fantasy that opposition to ILLEGAL immigration is equivalent to all immigration.
