When I see the editorial board of The Virginian-Pilot write stuff like this, I know Norfolk has come a long, long way:
Ideally, people would treat each other fairly and equitably, without needing rules to do so. But this is not an ideal world.
Virginia Beach and Chesapeake rightfully have already extended constitutional protections where they can: to gay employees of government.
In the absence of leadership from Richmond, Norfolk – and other cities in Virginia – should do the same.
The editorial was prompted by this article on the push to have local ordinances in place. According to the article:
[Norfolk Mayor Paul] Fraim said City Attorney Bernard A. Pishko told him City Manager Marcus Jones could put that policy in writing without City Council’s approval. Fraim said he will recommend that Jones do so.
For what it’s worth, I think Mr. Jones should do so as soon as possible.
IMO, I’m very happy that the Federal Reserve Bank in Richmond is flying The Gay Pride Flag as reported in the Va.Pilot. Hope that Del. Bob Marshall and AG Ken Cuccinelli get the message that their panty sniffing rhetoric is not endorsed by all Virginians.
Fran, while I disagree with Cuccinelli on gay issues and especially Marshall since he attempts so much legislation against gays, I agree with them that the Fed has no business flying the gay flag, a straight flag, or any non-official flag. This stunt does not give me confidence that the Fed will do their job. Not that they have done much to inspire confidence anyway. This will do nothing to protect anyone. It is only an example of doing things the Fed shouldn’t.
Thanks for your thoughtful reply to my comment. We can agree to disagree. My thought is that since the Flag in question has been flown our State survives. Since regular human beings work for the Fed, I’m sure that some among them might be gay. It’s nice to think that your employer comes down on the side of diversity and is willing to say so. One small statement of recognition. One more step in bringing Virginia into this century. Maybe….
