Quick links 07/13/11

First of all, a very happy birthday to my sister, Sarah, who is resting at home after surgery.

A few links from around the ‘net:

  • Virginia Beach appoints black council member, although not the one that some people wanted. But we have this thing called elections, and in this case, the election to fill the seat is just months away, this November. Rather than calling people names, supporters of Tanya Bullock should rally around her and get her elected.
  • Portsmouth council elections moved to November. That’s November 2012. Not only do current council members get an extension of six months on their terms, but the election will be drowned out by the noise of the presidential race. Portsmouth also has a special election this November, to fill the seat formerly occupied by Elizabeth Psimas.
  • Mixed drinks in Hatteras. Residents passed this yesterday. According to the article, only a few places in Dare County continue to not allow mixed drinks to be served.
  • Michael Irving wants to eradicate homophobia. Yes, that Michael Irving. And Leonard Pitts is telling the president to “evolve faster.” What’s this world coming to when two black, straight men support equality?
  • Congressman Ron Paul not running for re-election. He’s still running for president, though.

It’s going to be another smoker here in Hampton Roads today. Stay cool. And let me know what else is going on out there.
