My latest op-ed appeared in last Thursday’s Virginian-Pilot. In Hampton Roads, I’m told some 45% of our economy is government-related. If the debt-ceiling situation isn’t resolved, we’re in for a world of hurt.

of that 45%, how much is essential vs non essential entitlements?
No idea. It’s a number I’ve heard thrown around. The best I’ve come up with is from this forecast (pdf), which shows on page 53 that the Hampton Roads gross regional product is estimated to be $75.35B, and direct DoD spending is $20.75B (p. 11). Obviously, that doesn’t include other government spending in the area that is not DoD.
Turbo – in case you missed it in the newspaper, Dr. Vinod Agarwal, an economist at ODU, says it is defense spending. So when you add in other government spending, it’s more than that.
