The Virginia Legislative Black Caucus sent out a press release this afternoon, reiterating their support of fellow member Algie Howell. The members will be canvassing with him this coming Saturday.
The entire press release:
VLBC SUPPORTS DELEGATE ALGIE HOWELL IN AUGUST 23 PRIMARY
In June 2011, the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus (VLBC) launched the “18 Strong” Campaign. The purpose of this initiative is to support all eighteen members in their bid for re-election this fall. Only one incumbent is involved in a primary on August 23, Delegate Algie Howell in the 90th District. The VLBC fully supports Delegate Howell in his bid for re-election. On Saturday, August 20, members of the VLBC will be canvassing with Delegate Howell in his district starting at 11 a.m. Due to redistricting, the District has changed and information will be distributed alerting voters to the precinct changes. Senator Mamie E. Locke, chair of the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus saids, “Seniority plays an important role in the Virginia General Assembly. Delegate Howell has ascended to important roles due to his seniority, most notably his position on the powerful Appropriations Committee. He has championed legislation critical to economic development in the region and was the only legislator calling for an increase in the gas tax to address transportation construction and maintenance in the Commonwealth. This primary is important and voters are urged to turn out on August 23rd to vote for Delegate Algie Howell.”
Of course they would: none of them want to get primaried. (Bad precedent.)
Good point, Henry.
One of the major purposes of the Va. Legislative Black Caucus is to support its incumbent members. Just as the Senate Democratic Caucus or House Republican Caucus would not support a primary challenger to one of its members.
