Hampton Roads primaries: 90th HoD, 3rd Senate

There are only a couple of primaries in Hampton Roads today: the one on the Southside in which Democratic Del. Algie Howell (90th) is being challenged by Rick James and on the Peninsula in which Republican Senator Tommy Norment is being challenged by Mark Frechette.

In both cases, the winner of the primary will likely represent the districts as no other challengers have emerged. Technically, they have until Tuesday to file but I think it unlikely that anyone else will.

So if you live in these districts – the 90th covers parts of Norfolk and Virginia Beach and the 3rd covers parts of several localities – take a few minutes to cast your vote. Redistricting brought us new district lines, so check here for polling place information and here to see who your legislator is. (The last link is pretty important as it shows you what district you will be voting in.)

  1. Here’ a fearless prediction: Norment wins with at least 70%. If you live in the 3rd Distric though it’s like the old Byrd Machine days, this primary is really the only election that counts. This is about a 70% R district.

  2. As a resident of the redrawn 90th, I woke up with a Rick James lit piece on my porch.

Both candidates have only spoke about a few choice issues, and then in generalities. That makes picking tough.

In the end, I voted Algie Howell. The one thing that drove me is that he’s a member of the House Appropriations Committee, putting him in an enviable position to “bring home the bacon” for us in the 90th.

  3. Howell wins Approx 60% to 40% according to the state board of elections. I agree with Senater Donald McEachen. Their is no surplus in the budget despite the Governer’s claim. Since Delegate Howell is on Appropriations it is possible layoffs can be avoided in education and other services in Norfolk. The state is broke. The bacon saved may be what we have now with no decrease if Virginians are lucky.
