Thursday night, after a comedy concert in California, comedian Bill Maher announced onstage that he was donating $1 million to the SuperPac for Barack Obama. It was a shocking announcement, in part because until the Citizens United SCOTUS decision, we wouldn’t have seen these kinds of donations.
I am wondering if this sets off a wave of similar giving by famous and wealthy people.
I don’t know if we’ll see a lot of million dollar donors, only because there are few people who can afford to donate such a sum. (Especially since it isn’t tax deductible.)
Yeah, I don’t know either. We are in uncharted territory here. Instead of $5000 per primary/general, this sort of thing will and is happening. Certainly happening on the right side of this race.
I wonder if this was done as a reaction by Maher to the obscene amounts being thrown towards the Republican candidates. He may have purposely done this now to encourage other rich folks to follow his lead, or maybe he just did it now for his own unknown reasons.
Oh, there are a lot of folks that could donate that kind of money. The problem is; most of them are Republicans.
