Hampton votes no

As expected, the Hampton City Council last night voted against the regional transportation authority. No one spoke in favor of the plan. "The bill that brought this to us is not worthy of lining your birdcage," Councilman Paige V. Washington said. "There are so many flaws and reprehensible outcomes here that I believe this is … Continue reading Hampton votes no

Opinion, please: overexposure

Another thought occurred to me as I was thinking about fundraising. Everyone wants to get a "name" to come to their fundraiser. On the Democratic side, that would include Governor Tim Kaine, former governor Mark Warner, and Senator Jim Webb. Kaine and Warner have been to Hampton Roads a lot. Is there such a thing … Continue reading Opinion, please: overexposure

Trying to understand

OK, so when I read that she made a robo-call for Stall, I was a little taken aback. A few minutes ago, somebody sent me the link to the ad below. Somebody explain to me why Verbena Askew would campaign for Tricia Stall?

Funniest quote of the day

I thought the Allen folks would have helped me more, but it didn't work out that way. Former state senator Benny Lambert. OK, so maybe not so funny, but it certainly is sad. Did he really think that the Allen folks would jump in and help? Was he that delusional? By the way, congratulations to … Continue reading Funniest quote of the day

Noll officially contests 96th loss

According to the Daily Press, Sheila Noll, who lost last week's Republican nomination to Brenda Pogge in the 96th House district, has officially filed paperwork to contest the results.

Just one more

James City County approved the Hampton Roads regional transportation authority last night. That makes the current tally 6-2, just one "yes" vote away from it becoming a reality. We could have an answer by the end of the week: Hampton, which is expected to vote no, decides tonight and Isle of Wight decides on Thursday.

Joannou v Light: one perspective

The primary race between Johnny Joannou and Henry Light was the one that I followed the closest. The end result was not a surprise. One has to look at the 79th district in order to understand the dynamics at work here. After redistricting in 2001, a small portion of Norfolk (4 precincts) was lumped in … Continue reading Joannou v Light: one perspective

The results

Earlier today, I posted my predictions on nine races. As it turns out, I was correct in seven of the nine. Not bad. Obviously, I'm much better at predicting Democratic races than I am Republican ones because the two I missed were both Republican races 😉 A quick recap: Williams v Stall. I picked Williams … Continue reading The results

June 12, 1967: Loving v Virginia

Today marks the 40th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court case of Loving v Virginia in which the anti-miscegenation laws of Virginia and other states were struck down.To think that two people could not marry because of their race is, in many ways, mindboggling. And hypocritical. Let's face it: you can't look at a light-skinned … Continue reading June 12, 1967: Loving v Virginia
