Like hundreds of thousands of others, I followed this morning's Supreme Court announcements via SCOTUS blog. And, of course, on Twitter. If nothing else, it was exciting. And for CNN to get the verdict wrong was hilarious but quite sad. Such is the state of journalism today. Comments are rolling in from the various folks … Continue reading ACA upheld

Terry Sullivan was reinstated as the president of the University of Virginia. The vote to reinstate was unanimous. Opening the meeting, board rector Helen Dragas made another apology regarding the handling of the situation. She then turned the meeting over to W. Heywood Fralin, who made a motion to reinstate her. Norfolk school board appointee opts out
Norfolk was all set to nominate Joseph Lindsay to the school board - until the City Attorney belatedly said he had to choose between serving on the school board or being a substitute judge. Not surprising, Lindsey chose the latter.
Opinion, please: politician participate in program
A Virginia Beach council member, Barbara Henley, helped to create a farmland preservation program some 15 years ago. Tonight, the council will decide if Henley, 69, along with her husband, can put 99 acres into the program. If approved, they will receive about $32,000 a year for each of the next 25 and a lump … Continue reading Opinion, please: politician participate in program
The mis-education of the Wall Street Journal

But Ms. Sullivan—a sociologist by training—turned out to favor what she called an "incrementalist" approach. As late as this March, … Continue reading The mis-education of the Wall Street Journal
A proud heritage has been stained
My latest op-ed, title above, appeared in The Virginian-Pilot Thursday. It was an attempt to answer a question that I had seen posed around the 'net as well as to me personally on Twitter: why is the UVA story news and why should we care? I didn't even mention the issue of transparency, which I … Continue reading A proud heritage has been stained
Virginian-Pilot to Dragas: Resign
In case you missed this earlier, The Virginian-Pilot, which covers the south side of Hampton Roads, called for UVa rector Helen Dragas to resign. Dragas lives in Hampton Roads.
The UVA mess
I stayed up late last night, awaiting the public portion of the Board of Visitors meeting. I really didn't think it would be 2:39am before we heard; after all, the press had been provided a 15-minute warning at about 9:45pm, if memory serves. I'm getting too old to stay up half the night. Messed up … Continue reading The UVA mess
Norfolk real estate tax relief to be scaled back
The City of Norfolk is scaling back a tax relief program for the elderly and disabled. According to an article in The Virginian-Pilot, the budget which goes into effect July 1 places a $6 million cap on the program, which cost $7.5 million this year. Longtime readers of this blog will remember that I once … Continue reading Norfolk real estate tax relief to be scaled back
