Virginia to apologize for role in slavery

According to this AP story, legislation was introduced today in which Virginia will apologize for its role in slavery. The joint resolution urges that Virginia "acknowledges and atones for its pivotal role in slavery" and work to reconcile "centuries of brutal dehumanization and injustices." [...] The effort comes amid preparations to commemorate the 400th anniversary … Continue reading Virginia to apologize for role in slavery

Shirley Chisolm

Using WordPress.com's cool tag surfer, I was looking at some other blogs that talk about the same things that I do. I ran across this post about NY Congresswoman Shirley Chisolm and it took me back to that day twenty-five years ago when I had the opportunity to meet and speak with Congresswoman Chisolm. (Click … Continue reading Shirley Chisolm

Another Hampton Roads blog sighting: Scott’s Morning Brew

I ran across another Hampton Roads blog in the last couple of days, Scott's Morning Brew. From his "About" page: This blog is an attempt by me to become a little more “political” in nature. I claim Republican. I am a conservative. I am a moderate. But… I tend to straddle the fence on some … Continue reading Another Hampton Roads blog sighting: Scott’s Morning Brew

God’s talking to him again

Pat Robertson, that is. You know - the guy who predicted that 2006 would have some devastating storms and that Bush was going to win in a landslide in 2004. Oh yeah - and he prayed away hurricane Gloria a few years ago. 🙄 Robertson, in his never-ending quest for the spotlight, today said that … Continue reading God’s talking to him again

Redistricting: Moran reintroduces bi-partisan solution

I have been working on a series regarding redistricting, which I hope to get posted soon. In the meantime, the landscape changed a bit today with the reintroduction of a bi-partisan solution to the problem by House Democratic Caucus Chair Brian Moran. The legislation, originally co-sponsored by then delegate, now House Speaker, William J. Howell … Continue reading Redistricting: Moran reintroduces bi-partisan solution

Lack of communication

One of my pet peeves is the lack of communication that exists seemingly everywhere. What good is our democracy if only a few are allowed to participate? Two stories in Sunday's Virginian-Pilot point out the glaring lack of sharing of information. The first one, Open & Shut, appeared on the front page above the fold, … Continue reading Lack of communication

Sunday afternoon roundup

Rob over at Raising Kaine points to an article about Del. Bob Brink's proposal to eliminate robo calls. Yours truly is quoted but I guess the writer must have missed this post. Check out GOTV's Best of the Web 2006 awards 🙂 Following Waldo's lead, here are five things you never knew about me: I … Continue reading Sunday afternoon roundup

Words to live by

Once again, one of my favorite columnists in the Virginian-Pilot comes thru with a great column. Saturday's Issues of Faith by Betsy Wright Rhodes is not a list of New Year's resolutions. Instead, she provides us a list of things words to live by. No doubt some of these belong on my favorite quotes page. … Continue reading Words to live by

Peeking out

I've been taking a few days of well-deserved rest. Given that it has been almost two years since I've had any real time off, I figured I'd better grab it now while I can. But a couple of things have come up over the last few days that I wanted to comment on. So, I'm … Continue reading Peeking out
