Warner picks up more endorsements

Former governor Mark Warner picked up some more endorsements today, this time from various sheriffs across the Old Dominion. The endorsements came as the Virginia Sheriff's Association held their conference today in Roanoke. The association itself does not endorse candidates. Warner has held a commanding lead in the polls over his Republican rival, Jim Gilmore. … Continue reading Warner picks up more endorsements

In case you missed it: SNL – Palin / Hillary

This is just too funny. Tina Fey has got Palin down pat 🙂 (Note: there is a 15-second ad at the beginning) My favorite line: "I can see Russia from my house." UPDATE: For some reason, this video autoplays. I find that annoying. You can see the video here

Let’s get ready to rumble!

Mark Warner has agreed to a statewide televised debate with Jim Gilmore on October 3 from 7pm to 8pm. The proposal for this debate, to be hosted by WSLS-NBC 10 in Roanoke, was submitted to the campaigns in July. Yet to be determined are the details on the moderator and the media panel. WSLS will … Continue reading Let’s get ready to rumble!

Drake vs Nye: the first debate

Incumbent Republican Congresswoman Thelma Drake and Democratic challenger Glenn Nye squared off in the first public debate of the season Friday afternoon.  The format allowed each candidate four minutes to answer the question and a one-minnute rebuttal, with a two-minute closing statement. Whoever went first, determined by the winner of a coin toss, always answered … Continue reading Drake vs Nye: the first debate

Remembering 9/11

Everyone remembers where they were on that fateful day, seven years ago. But as I wrote two years ago, something else came out of that event: for a while, we became a nation united. We were united in our grief for the loss of lives so senselessly, in our anger that someone would dare to … Continue reading Remembering 9/11

Palin NOT coming to Beach

According to PilotOnline, Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin will not be coming to Virginia Beach on September 18, as previously announced. Maybe this poll scared her off? In the area around Norfolk, Hampton Roads and Virginia Beach — a region John Kerry lost by four points — Obama appears to have a 13-point advantage.

Mark Warner responds

I'm not so sure it was a smart move on Jim Gilmore's part to try to attack Mark Warner on TV. Of course the paltry ad buy - not by Gilmore but by the RPV, as Gilmore doesn't have any money - probably won't be seen by many, but it prompted this response from Mark … Continue reading Mark Warner responds

The DNC through the eyes of a kid

I believe Kenton Ngo, who served as a page at the DNC, is all of 17. But his writeup of the convention contains the perceptions and wisdom of someone much older. It was choreographed down to the line, which signs went up when. On the first three nights, a succession of signs followed a succession … Continue reading The DNC through the eyes of a kid

Calling out Warner to debate

In the midst of the convention, I caught this story about Mark Warner turning down the League of Women Voters' invitation to debate Jim Gilmore in a live, televised state-wide event. I was reminded of it when reading the editorial in Thursday morning's Virginian Pilot. Gilmore, typically, thinks that Warner is ducking him. "I think … Continue reading Calling out Warner to debate

Crime and punishment

Disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff was sentenced to 4 years in prison Thursday. Already in prison in Florida, the sentence was longer than he had expected but not as long as it could have been. "I come before you as a broken man," Abramoff said at his sentencing before U.S. District Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle. "I'm … Continue reading Crime and punishment
