Norfolk and Tema Twinning next week

The twinning of Norfolk and Tema, Ghana will take place during a series of events scheduled for next week, Monday, November 30 through Saturday, December 4.  An earlier event, scheduled for last month, was delayed due to a travel embargo and visa problems. From the original invitation: Norfolk Sister City Association, a member of Sister … Continue reading Norfolk and Tema Twinning next week

Shut out and shut down

My latest column, with the above title, appeared in The Virginian-Pilot Wednesday. Almost on cue, one local TV station did a story on the severance package of the city manager Wednesday evening, as well as a bit on the incoming city manager. It's one thing that the citizens aren't getting the information. After living in … Continue reading Shut out and shut down

Transparency

Or not. Norfolk hired a new city manager just two weeks after the current manager announced her retirement and without any interviews of other candidates or input from the public. Portsmouth appointed a new council member just a week after the special election for mayor, also without interviews of other candidates or input from the … Continue reading Transparency

It’s not really a spectator sport

Politics, that is. The above is the title of my latest column, which appeared in Thursday's Virginian-Pilot.  For those who are not familiar, the stats I cited can be found on the State Board of Elections website. Exit poll interpretations are all over the web, but the data can be found here.

Another election, another flier

The election in Norfolk's Ward 7 took on a different tone yesterday when the winning candidate, Angelia Williams, distributed a sample ballot which contained the picture of her alongside Congressman Bobby Scott.  Poll workers were overheard telling voters that Scott, who was also up for re-election, had endorsed Williams.  I was told by others that … Continue reading Another election, another flier

Rep. Bobby Scott

I interviewed Rep. Bobby Scott several weeks ago but have had some difficulty getting the video converted. Although not perfect, you can get the gist of our interview.

Norfolk Ward 7 candidates’ forum

The four candidates for the open seat in Norfolk's Ward 7 council race squared off in a candidates' forum Thursday evening. The special election is Tuesday. If you are reading this via email, please visit my blog to view the video.

Waiting for the 3rd shoe to drop

They say deaths come in threes. Monday morning, I saw in the obituaries that Al Teich had died Sunday. I was surprised that it took until Tuesday afternoon for The Virginian-Pilot to mention it - and then only in a brief piece mostly garnered from Monday's obituary.  In the old days, the paper would have … Continue reading Waiting for the 3rd shoe to drop

Pondering leadership

My latest column, title above, appeared in The Virginian-Pilot today.  I've been thinking for a while about what constitutes a leader, and had intended to do one of my "Opinion, please" posts on it. I find it frustrating that candidates call themselves leaders. Shouldn't that be for others to say? Show me that others recognize … Continue reading Pondering leadership

Norfolk Ward 7 10/20 fundraising reports

Monday was the deadline for filing campaign finance reports for the period 10/1 - 10/20. Earl Fraley, who was endorsed by The Virginian-Pilot Monday, raised $1,927 in cash from 44 donors, the largest of which was $204. His major expenditures are for ads. I'm still not seeing the final cost of his yard signs. He … Continue reading Norfolk Ward 7 10/20 fundraising reports
