Perusing the campaign finance reports got me to thinking about contributions to candidates running unopposed. In a world in which resources are unlimited, everybody would get campaign contributions. But we don't live in that world. And, given the fact that there is an election in Virginia every year, it would seem that limited resources would … Continue reading Opinion, please: contributions to candidates running unopposed

VA voter registration issues
Jim Patrick has an amazing post on the Virginia's attempt to upgrade its voter registration software. The software is assigning voters to the wrong precinct and even worse: eliminating registered voters! There was a problem a couple of weeks ago in Portsmouth regarding voters being assigned to the wrong precinct. (I don't seem to be … Continue reading VA voter registration issues
New Page: 21/51
I've added a new page to this blog - 21/51 - which includes a listing of all of the Democratic candidates in the Commonwealth. Click on the tab at the top of the blog (next to guestbook) to access it. Of course, the Arlington County Democrats, who came up with that cool 21/51 logo, beat … Continue reading New Page: 21/51
Former VM Collins dead at 61
The Virginian Pilot has reported the death of former Norfolk councilman and Vice Mayor Herbert Collins. Collins was the lead plantiff in the suit brought against the city that resulted in the implementation of the ward system. He was elected to council in 1994 and became vice mayor, a ceremonial position, in 1996. Collins made … Continue reading Former VM Collins dead at 61
What’s wrong with this picture?
Click to enlarge When I first heard that Senator Nick Rerras had appropriated the blue crab of challenger Ralph Northam, I needed to see it for myself. Because I live the 6th, I get Rerras' mailings all the time. However, since this dinner was being held on the Eastern Shore, I didn't get the invitation. … Continue reading What’s wrong with this picture?
Isle of Wight says yes, HRTA approved
By a 3-2 vote, the Isle of Wight County Board agreed to the Hampton Roads Transportation Authority. The Daily Press story is here and the Virginian Pilot one is here. I am not happy with the plan. I understand the argument that something had to be done and that this is the best they could … Continue reading Isle of Wight says yes, HRTA approved
Joannou v Light: one perspective
The primary race between Johnny Joannou and Henry Light was the one that I followed the closest. The end result was not a surprise. One has to look at the 79th district in order to understand the dynamics at work here. After redistricting in 2001, a small portion of Norfolk (4 precincts) was lumped in … Continue reading Joannou v Light: one perspective
The results
Earlier today, I posted my predictions on nine races. As it turns out, I was correct in seven of the nine. Not bad. Obviously, I'm much better at predicting Democratic races than I am Republican ones because the two I missed were both Republican races 😉 A quick recap: Williams v Stall. I picked Williams … Continue reading The results
OTR 6/10/07: Joannou v Light Debate
This week's On the Record with host Joel Rubin features a debate between Democratic incumbent in the 79th Johnny Joannou and challenger Henry Light. This is the last opportunity for voters to see the two candidates before Tuesday's primary. Since there is no Republican opponent, the winner will represent the district. Also, local activists organizing … Continue reading OTR 6/10/07: Joannou v Light Debate
“Pet Sounds: The Life and Times of Nigel Zingraff and Petula Clark”
The above is the name of a musical to be performed by Granby High School students. But the students won't be performing at the school. Why? The gay and racial references and profanity all raised red flags, [Granby principal Ted] Daughtrey said. He had many considerations to balance: the wishes of taxpayers who finance the … Continue reading “Pet Sounds: The Life and Times of Nigel Zingraff and Petula Clark”
