I have never quite understood why Mayor Fraim wanted a big-league sports team here in Norfolk. Not only would we have to go it alone in putting together the financing (due, mostly, to the Dillon Rule), I just don't think Hampton Roads has the resources to support one. The issue of substitution - whereby folks … Continue reading No big-league sports in Norfolk

Spring forward
At 2am in the morning, Daylight Savings Time starts. I have to admit that I'm none too happy about loosing an hour when time is so precious. Yeah, I know about the supposed energy savings but around here, it means nothing. Instead of working til 2am, I'll just be working til 3am. And fighting to … Continue reading Spring forward

Neither Clinton, Nor Obama
Yesterday's Virginian-Pilot reprinted an article by New York Times op-ed writer David Brooks with the above title. In it, Brooks lays out the case for New Mexico governor Bill Richardson. He is, after all, the most experienced person running for president. It seems I'm not the only one who thinks that Richardson may be the … Continue reading Neither Clinton, Nor Obama

Joannou in the news
The Virginian-Pilot did a profile of Del. Johnny Joannou in Monday's paper. House Majority Leader Morgan Griffith, R-Salem, said Joannou's philosophy was shaped by his upbringing in Portsmouth. He was raised by Greek parents who came to the United States in the early 20th century. His father was born into a family of 12 siblings, … Continue reading Joannou in the news
An expensive lie
See, sometimes telling lies gets you in big trouble: A construction company that completed work on part of U.S. 460 will pay $2.5 million for making false statements related to a federal contract that required the company to hire minority businesses for the job, U.S. Attorney Tom Bondurant said Monday. English Construction hired one black … Continue reading An expensive lie
