Blogger Jaded JD has written an incredible post on why he is leaving left Virginia. The title, "It is well, it is well with my soul" is a reference to an old hymn that I associate mostly with funerals, as it was a staple in the church in which I grew up. The hymn was … Continue reading Jaded JD: Leaving Virginia

Should have vetoed the estate tax repeal
Governor Tim Kaine managed to find nearly $29 million in unspent balances, savings and higher-than-expected lottery yields. So he proceeded to propose spending the money on a number of projects, including $1.4 million for Norfolk State University's library. In all, the governor proposed 36 amendments to the $72 billion budget presented to him on June … Continue reading Should have vetoed the estate tax repeal
New website: Blogging the Amendment
ImNotEmeril's latest post on the Marshall Newman amendment is a very well written piece, raising some serious questions about the proposed amendment. While checking on the trackback for the post, I came across a new blog that has been set up to discuss the amendment. Check out Blogging the Amendment.
VA Bloggers Blog Carnival
In case you missed any of the writeups about last weekend's Blog Summit, Semi Truths has done an excellent job pulling together all of the posts about it. Take a look - well worth the read 😉
Fallout from the blog conference
One of the items discussed in detail at the conference was the issue of whether bloggers are journalists. It seems that the journalist panelists mostly thought we are not, mainly because our work is not subject to an editorial process. I concede the point that we do not have editors. Senate primary: The Black Vote in Norfolk
Much has been written about the black vote in Hampton Roads contributing to a loss for Jim Webb. I have argued that the Affirmative Action issue never really made it down here. Today, I took a look at the precinct-by-precinct voting. Norfolk has 55 precincts. Eleven of those precincts are more than 80% black. The … Continue reading Senate primary: The Black Vote in Norfolk
Election night podcast
Fellow Hampton Roads blogger Bearing Drift has up the podcast he recorded last night with yours truly and Ben Tribbet of Not Larry Sabato. Included are comments from special guests Larry Roberts, who was chairman of Tim Kaine's campaign, and Rep. Jim Moran. Check it out.
A Webb Win
With more than 90% of the vote counted as I write this, Jim Webb is ahead by more than 8,000 votes. I do not see how Harris Miller can make up the difference. My congratulations to Mr. Webb. My condolences to Mr. Miller. There are some things to be learned from this primary. First, voter … Continue reading A Webb Win
High turnout
The primary turnout is much higher than I expected. Right now, with 2,202 out of 2,403 precincts reporting statewide, the turnout is almost 135,000. And, as I suspected, a high turnout has helped Webb. If you haven't seen the numbers, take a look here.
Where to watch the results
With the polls now closed, it's time to watch the results. I'm keeping tabs in Norfolk by using the link here. Of course, there's nothing there right now 😦 Nothing on the Virginia Beach results, either. You can follow statewide results on the State Board of Elections website. That link is here. In the past, … Continue reading Where to watch the results
