Lynch out; Hester’s VM status in jeopardy

We now have one less candidate in the May council race. Kerry Lynch, who announced his run against incumbent Paul Riddick for the Ward 4 seat, failed to gather the required 125 signatures. Lynch waited until Tuesday to file his petitions, leaving no time for him to rectify the situation that he was 8 signatures … Continue reading Lynch out; Hester’s VM status in jeopardy

March 8: Blog Against Sexism Day

Today is Blog Against Sexism Day, appropriate since today is also International Woman's Day. Interestingly, I had a conversation just last night with a friend about sexism in the workplace. While I have observed others being the victim of sexism, it is not something I have ever experienced. My friend didn't believe that. Of course, … Continue reading March 8: Blog Against Sexism Day

Norfolk Tea Party

I was researching some info for an upcoming article about the ward system here in Norfolk and ran across this little gem, regarding the Norfolk Tea Party. One of my dear friends, Bob Hicks, now deceased, was a member of this group. I haven't figured out who all of the other players were but I … Continue reading Norfolk Tea Party

Norfolk Council Races Update

I attended Paul Riddick's campaign kick-off this morning. Also in attendance were five other council members: Paul Fraim, Barclay Winn, Don Williams, Randy Wright and Anthony Burfoot. Noticeably missing was Daun Hester. I understand that Vice Mayor Hester is supporting Riddick's opponent, Kerry Lynch. The surpise in this bunch was the presence of Anthony Burfoot. … Continue reading Norfolk Council Races Update

Democracy dies when people turn on their TV sets

Raising Kaine has an interesting post: Only one of the 1,000 adults polled in the telephone survey could name all five freedoms guaranteed under the First Amendment. Yet more than one in five (22 percent) could identify all five major characters in Matt Groening’s cartoon family. Similarly, only 8 people in 100 could name at … Continue reading Democracy dies when people turn on their TV sets

Norfolk could be like Alaska

The Brad Blog is reporting on the attempt to get the 2004 Alaskan voting data from the Diebold machines in use there. After agreeing to release the data, the state's top security officer is refusing to allow it to happen, citing security concerns. Do tell - what security risk would this pose?

DYK: Norfolk has 105,000+ registered voters

For the November 2005 elections, Norfolk had 105,022 registered voters. Unfortunately, only 42,634 of them bothered to vote. When you look at the number of people who vote in council elections, the numbers get even worse. The last council election in May 2004 (the two superwards) resulted in turnout of only 5,980 voters, an abysmal … Continue reading DYK: Norfolk has 105,000+ registered voters
