Redistricting resolution passes Senate

SJR 352, championed by Senator Creigh Deeds, passed the Senate today by a vote of 22-18 and moves on to the House.

“For too long, those elected have chosen their electorate,” Deeds said on the Senate floor before the vote. “Democrats did it when we were in charge. Republicans did it the last time. But wrongs are only compounded when they are repeated. The people of this Commonwealth deserve better.”

Crossing over to join the 16 Democrats were six Republicans – Harry B. Blevins, Ken Cuccinelli, H. Russell Potts, Jr., Kenneth W. Stolle, John C. Watkins, and Martin E. Williams.

Now, can the delegates in the house get together and get this passed?

UPDATE: As James Martin points out, there are 17 Democrats in the Senate.  The one D not voting for the plan? Benny Lambert.

One would certainly hope so. This is the way to get the whole of the constituents heard – which I believe is the point of democracy – and it’s been too long in coming.
