I have to say that the best thing I heard all evening was when Ryan Seacrest said that Tony Bennett was not going to be singing 🙂 Hey, I like standards as much as the next gal, but a Tony Bennett fan, I’m not. But then again, I can honestly say that I’d rather hear Bennett than Sanjaya.
Once again, that silly kid didn’t get kicked off. To make matters worse, he wasn’t even in the bottom three, this site notwithstanding.
Winding up in the bottom three tonight were Gina, Haley and Phil. There was no question in my mind that Phil belonged there. His rendition of “Night and Day” – not a good song to start with – was uninspiring, to put it mildly. Haley’s arrangement last night hurt her. For whatever reason, the band just didn’t swing while she was singing. She doesn’t have the big voice that some of the others have – maybe that’s why they toned down the arrangement. She probably belonged in the bottom three.
But Gina? Well, the rocker girl showed a different side last night, one I liked very much. Her pitch was almost perfect, her control awesome. I think she was one of the best performers last night.
Needless to say, I was quite surprised that Gina was the one voted off. Maybe her rocker fans were unable to appreciate how well she performed. You know, even rocker girl Stevie Nicks knows how to sing a ballad. It doesn’t always have to be fast and rough. Gina showed real talent.
I have to wonder how long folks will continue to watch this train wreck that American Idol has become. To have Sanjaya remain on the show when a real talented performer is booted off is ridiculous.
Then again, it’s kinda like rubber-necking at an accident. You just can’t stop yourself from taking a peek.

I agree completely with your whole blog sangia needs to go
Well, I don’t watch the show, never have. But I do comment on non-political, non-Virginia based message boards, and from what I have seen there is a big movement to destroy the show itself by “voting for the worst”. It looks like the site attracts people to vote for the worst contestant on a number of voter motivated tv shows. It’s unfortunately one of those things that comes hand in hand with the internets.
http://www.votefortheworst.com/
Yeah, I’ve seen that site. No doubt it is having the desired effect. Sanjaya is still on.
The thing I love about votefortheworst.com is that you don’t actually have to watch the show, which is brilliant. There’s no need to positively influence American Idol’s ratings; all you have to do is know what number you need to send your vote to, which is found easily enough without patronizing the program.
By patronizing, of course, I mean in the sense of tuning into the show and watching it and the sponsor advertisements. Not in the mocking sense. We obviously DO mock, but that’s not what I meant.
I generally TiVo the show, so those ads are lost on me. I generally start watching a few minutes late and fast forward thru the commercials.
voteforworst.com is ruining the show, which, I assume, is their aim. As a former full-time performer, it really saddens me that this is going on. The chances of “making it” as a performer are so slim that outlets like this serve a purpose for allowing folks the opportunity. There’s history here – go back to Ted Mack’s Original Amateur Hour.
Killing a show for what? Because you can?
Sanjaya is the anti-Christ.
BTW, line of the day as heard on the Ron and Fez Show:
“I called Dell Tech Support, and all I heard was “To vote for Sanjaya, press 1″… What the hell?”
LOL Squeaky, that’s hillarious.
Vivian, the way I see it, VFTW is essentially calling a bluff. If the purpose of American Idol was truly to showcase the best talent America has to offer in picking a winner, we’d also have to assume that Sanjaya beat out all the other folks who auditioned but didn’t make it on the show based on his own merit. Does anyone really think that’s the case? The producers shepherded him through auditions past more-qualified singers because they thought it would help their ratings, and that was more important to them than giving a qualified performer a chance at “making it.” Now they’re being punished for creating an inauthentic competition. Bravo, I say.
By the way, I didn’t know you were a performer.
edit to above post: I could have sworn I saw you use the phrase “as a former performer” somewhere but I don’t see it now. I must be tired. Time to send out for more coffee.
anon – you’re right that Sanjaya was put thru for ratings. That hasn’t changed in all the years that these amateur hour programs have been around. I mean – come on – look at the folks who were “stars” in the 1950s and tell me they all had talent. (For that matter, look at the ones we have today!) It has always been about packaging.
Yeah, I used to sing/play 6 nights a week. A long time ago 😉
What do you play, and what do you sing? Will you serenade us at your memorial day festivities?
(And I’m definitely not going to argue whether or not today’s musicians have talent, nor will I argue whether or not today’s musical fans have any aesthetic taste. All I know is that if I hear that “Does that make me crazy?” song on the radio again, I’m going to wrap my car around a telephone pole in protest).
I play a little bit of everything (I was a music ed major in college originally) but mostly piano now. I sing – or rather, I used to sing – a little bit of everything except hard rock. As for serenading – um, no. Better leave that to the pros 😉
