Northam: doctor, citizen

Ralph Northam campaigningA little before 8am this morning, Ralph Northam was heading for work. As he headed down Granby Street, near Norfolk Collegiate, he witnessed an accident. A father was walking his son across the street, taking him to school. There was a lady pulling out, heading south on Granby Street. Apparently, she was looking towards Wards Corner and never saw Richard White and his son, Frankie, in the crosswalk. She struck the boy, flipping him up in the air, and he landed on the pavement.

Northam, a pediatric neurologist, jumped out of his vehicle, called the Rescue Squad and proceeded to help the boy. He examined him, checking his neck and so forth, and loaded him into the ambulance when it arrived shortly thereafter. The boy was taken to Norfolk General for further examination and he is apparently doing well, with no broken bones, according to a report from them that Dr. Northam received.

Other witnesses to the accident were out there as well. One of them had turned off his car and when he went to leave, the car wouldn’t start. Dr. Northam retrieved his jumper cables and started the man’s car!

Twice in one morning, Dr. Northam exhibited his commitment to our community, not as a contrived photo op but simply as a contributing member of our society. You may or may not read this story in the local news. You probably won’t see it in any mail you receive. But this speaks to the character of the man, one willing to use his skills to help others.

This is the kind of guy we need to represent us. Come November 6, elect Ralph Northam. In the meantime, he needs our help. Volunteer and contribute today.

  1. From what I have seen Nick Rerras has never done anything for anyone unless he was being paid to do it or he thought that it would get him re-elected (other than his stint as neighborhood watch captain). Where was citizen Rerras? Where are his volunteer activities before he was elected. No one ever heard of him. Good deeds for your own profit are not good deeds. That’s the difference between the two candidates.

  2. SLN,
I am sure Ralph or one of his campaign people called everybody they could and ask them to print this story. If that was the case, which I am sure it is, Goods deeds for your own profit (winning an election, campaign contributions, candidate media coverage) are good deeds. If Ralph is truly the man you are claiming and not trying to use this as campaign material, he would just go about his normal day.

  3. Um, rlewis, he was just going about his normal day.

And why in the world would you think that he did this for profit? Ralph is a fine man and doesn’t need to beef up his resume with BS stories.

  4. Northam is just a good person who does help people. I was asking if anyone knew of any spontaneous good deeds of citizen Rerras because they are not widely known.

  5. It was me.

I found out about this when I called the CM of the Northam Campaign sometime this AM. I called Vivian about something else and mentioned it to her while I was on the phone. Vivian was going to contact the CM and ask for clarification on the details. Evidently she did.

  6. Susan,
I can only imagine how the conversation went. “Hey Susan, perfect timing for your call, I was just about to call you. I have a great story for you, could you past it on to as many people as you can, this will make great campaign press. Ralph doesn’t really care about this and he really didn’t want me to say anything, but this is to great a story for the public to not hear about. Thanks for all of your help on this.” And Ralph doesn’t want any profit from a good deed!

Was the CM a witness to the events or was the info relayed from Ralph to the CM?

Are you sure you got the info from the Northam Campaign and not the Farlow Campaign?

  7. What should I apologize for? I am just asking for details. By your logic SLN, Ralph should not benefit from his good deeds. I think it is great what Ralph did. But don’t tell me he and his campaign are not going to take advantage of good news and just be quiet about it. This is a classic example of profitting from his good deeds.

  8. I still don’t see how a doctor benefits from serving in the state senate. For him, it really it is about public service. Of course, Rerras depends on the taxpayers to feed his family.I’m still waiting to hear about Rerras’ non-profit good deeds.
